CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team powered to a 3-0 victory over Wilson College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Friday evening at Nelson Gymnasium.
The Falcons (9-8 overall, 6-1 CSAC) won by set scores of 25-8, 25-7, and 25-10 to post their third-straight sweep.
Junior
Maddison Minyo (Covington, Pa./North Penn-Mansfield) led the squad with six kills while junior
Ziah Melton (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) and sophomore
Akashia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute ) contributed with five kills each. Junior
Ava Grapsy (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) also had a strong night with a match-high 18 assists, while adding seven digs, two blocks, and one service ace. Junior
Rebekka Sanchez-Castro (Columbia, Md./Atholton) pitched in a match-high 10 kills while first-year
Ellise Everett (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona ) finished with a match-high five blocks.
Wilson (3-19 overall, 3-4 CSAC) was led by sophomore Deah Menedis (Reisterstown, Md.), who finished with a match-high nine kills and added three digs. First-year Jenna Dixon (California, Pa.) handed out seven assists while first-year Allyson Garcelon (Shrewsbury, Pa.) chipped in nine digs.
Cedar Crest played a strong first set and only trailed once. Minyo served the Falcons to eight straight points and built a nine-point lead at 13-4. With Cedar Crest holding an 18-8 advantage, sophomore
Alexis Cummins (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) served the visitors to an 8-0 run and the 25-8 first set win. Melton and Minyo finished with three kills apiece in the frame.
The Falcons raced out to a fast start in set number two, grabbing 10 of the first 11 points. Later in the set, Cedar Crest strung together an 11-2 run to capture the frame with a 25-7 score.
The Phoenix took an early lead in the final set, but after a Wilson service error to make the score 2-2, junior
Daja Jackson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Gilbert ) and first-year
Alana Connor (Manassas, Va./Charles J. Colgan ) served the Falcons back in front to a 10-3 advantage with an 8-1 run. The Falcons kept control of the set with a 9-0 spurt to build a 14-point lead, 20-6, before coming away with the 25-10 victory.
Cedar Crest will travel to Notre Dame of Maryland University for its next match on Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. Wilson stays home to play host Clarks Summit University on Tuesday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m.
