FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team saw its season come to a close on Thursday night, falling to the University of Mary Washington in a 3-0 final in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Falcons fell by set scores of 25-9, 25-12, and 25-10 to end the season at 13-9, while the Eagles improve to 25-7.
Leading the way for the Cedar Crest attack were junior
Ava Grapsy (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic), along sophomores
Akashia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) and
Alexis Cummins (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge), tallying three kills apiece. Junior
Rebekka Sanchez Castro (Columbia, Md./Atholton) pitched in a team-high 11 digs and a pair of service aces while Grapsy dished out a team-high nine assists.
Sophomore Emily Flamm (Spotsylvania, Va.) paced Mary Washington with nine kills.
The Eagles got out to a 12-2 advantage in the first set, including scoring eight of the first nine points. The Falcons cut the deficit to six, 13-7, after a 3-0 run capped off by a kill by Grapsy. Mary Washington then went on a 9-0 spurt to build a 22-7 lead before taking the set by the 25-9 score.
The Eagles jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second set. After Cedar Crest cut the deficit to seven, 16-9, following an attack error, the Eagles put together a 6-0 run to make the
score 22-9 and then went onto win the frame, 25-12.
Mary Washington built another big lead in the third set, getting out to a 12-4 advantage after an attack error by the Falcons. Later in the set, the Eagles strung together seven consecutive points to push the score to 19-7, before doubling up Cedar Crest, 6-3 over the remainder of the set to capture the stanza, 25-10 for the sweep.
