Softball Secures First Win of Season; Splits on Opening Day of Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team earned its first win of the 2022 season with a 12-5 victory over Hilbert College, after suffering a 7-6 extra innings loss to Eastern Mennonite University at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex on Sunday.

Game One – Eastern Mennonite 7, Cedar Crest 6 (Eight Innings)

The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the second, tallying three runs. Cedar Crest got the scoring started with a single from graduate student Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), scoring classmate Ashley Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and senior Sophia Callari (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon). Cedar Crest tacked on another when Renee Snyder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) singled to center field, which drove in Tremblay.

The Falcons added two more runs in the third. Senior Rachel Savini (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) connected on a base knock, sending graduate student Nicole Santaniello (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) home and Heller followed with a
single through the left side, plating Savini from second base.

The Royals scored five unanswered runs and took the 6-5 advantage when sophomore Bri Allen (Weyers Cave, Va.) scored on an error.

Cedar Crest pulled even in the top of the seventh when Savini singled to second base, which scored Santaniello.

Freshman Kaitlyn Fletcher (Harrisonburg, Va.) delivered the game-winning hit after she singled down the left field line, sending Allen home for the victory.

Senior Emily Campbell (Broadway, Va.) was victorious in the circle for Eastern Mennonite. She tossed the final 5.2 innings and allowed one run on six hits with seven strikeouts. Freshman BB Aquila (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was tagged with the loss for the Falcons. She surrendered four runs on eight hits to go along with two strikeouts and three walks.

Snyder, Santaniello, Savini, and Heller tallied two hits apiece in the setback.

Game 2 – Cedar Crest 12, Hilbert 5

Cedar Crest scored four runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to take a commanding lead it would never relinquish. Tremblay led the Falcons with three hits and two RBI while sophomore Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) registered the win in the circle, tossing 3.0 innings and striking out one.

Leading 7-0, Hilbert plated three straight runs over the second and third inning. The Hawks would get to within four (8-4) in the fourth on a double to left center from junior Emma McNamara (Stratford, Conn.), which plated classmate Katie Barone (Hamburg, N.Y.).

The Falcons put up four in the fifth inning, highlighted by three doubles, one apiece from Tremblay, Snyder, and Santaniello to stretch the lead to 12-4.

Barone drove in the final run of the contest on a groundout to third, which sent freshman Chloe Champagne (Chateaugay, N.Y.) home for the 12-5 final.

Cedar Crest (1-2 overall) return to the field tomorrow, Monday, March 7 with contests against Dean College (1:30 p.m.) and Lebanon Valley College (3:30 p.m.) at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
