READING, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College soccer team was downed by non-conference opponent Alvernia University in a 5-2 final on Tuesday night.
The Golden Wolves got its goals from four different players, including the eventual game winner from the foot of first-year Haley Dougherty (Middletown, Del.) in the 58
th minute to lead Alvernia (1-2-2 overall) to victory. The home team controlled the pace of play in the second half and outshot Cedar Crest 31-10 while earning a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
Senior
Taylor Wolf (Townsend, Del./Middletown) netted a pair of penalty kicks to pace the Falcons (2-2-1 overall). Senior
Lauren Makely (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) made a season-high eight stops in goal in 66 minutes. First-year
Bella Bozen (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) played the final 24 minutes and made four stops.
Wolf put Cedar Crest in front in the seventh minute when she drew foul in the box, which caused a penalty kick. The senior set up the shot and deposited it low and to the left of Golden Wolves' sophomore goalkeeper Brynn Bock (Cape May Court House, N.J.).
Alvernia pulled even in the 15
th minute on a marker from first-year Gianna Ordanoff (Harrisburg, Pa.) with the assist going to Dougherty.
The Falcons struck again in the 18
th minute when Wolf buried another penalty kick to make it 2-1.
The Golden Wolves broke the tie in the 24
th minute on a goal by sophomore Olivia Malone (Sinking Spring, Pa.). The tally was set up by first-year Gabriella Fontana (Douglassville, Pa.).
Dougherty, first-year Macy McDonough (Sinking Spring, Pa.), and Ordanoff each netted second half goals to round out the scoring for Alvernia in the 5-2 final.
Cedar Crest will next host John Jay College on Saturday, September 17 at 1:00 p.m.
