LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College basketball team saw its comeback bid fall just short in a 67-59 loss to Cairn University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the Mason Activity Center.
The Highlanders got out to a 20-12 lead after one quarter and then used an 18-11 second stanza to carry a 38-23 advantage into halftime.
The Falcons began to chip away at the deficit in the third quarter. Cedar Crest went on a 16-8 run to pull to within seven, 46-39, capped off by a pair of successful free throws from senior
Ashley Wilson (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) with 3:08 to play in the frame. Cairn then closed the 10-3 spurt to head into the final frame with a 56-42 advantage.
The margin reached as many as 16 in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons made a late charge to get back into the game. Down 60-44 with 6:45 remaining in regulation, Cedar Crest embarked on a 13-0 run to trim the deficit to three, 60-57, following a jumper by Wilson with 1:55 to play.
The Highlanders answered back with a 7-2 run to finish the game with the 67-59 score.
Sophomore Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, N.J.) paced Cairn with a double-double of 22 points and 24 rebounds. She also added three steals, two blocks, and one assist. Sophomore Tamia Warner (Ewing, N.J.) added 22 points, three boards, two assists, and one steal while sophomore Kailee Sobrino (Tucson, Ariz.) was the final Highlander in double figures with 13 points to go along with three rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
Wilson matched a season-high with 33 points on 11-for-38 shooting to go along with eight rebounds, five steals, three assists, and a block. First-year
Haivynn Kovach (Virginia Beach, Va./Churchland) pitched in 10 points, seven boards, seven assists, two blocks, and a steal while junior
Morgan Ritchie (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) added 10 points, four caroms, and one block. First-year
Bella Bozen (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) contributed four points, a team-high 12 rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block while senior
Kaylen Ledford (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) closed the scoring with two points, seven boards, and three assists.
Cedar Crest (0-9 overall, 0-7 CSAC) will travel to Notre Dame of Maryland University for its next tilt on Wednesday, January 18 at 7:00 p.m. Cairn (4-10 overall, 2-6 CSAC) heads to Keystone College for its next contest on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
