ASHLAND, Va. – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team was defeated by Randolph-Macon College 5-1 in a non-league contest at Nunnally Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the opening quarter to build the 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Lynn Giesken (Yorktown, Va.) recorded the first goal in the eighth minute off an assist from junior Ashlyn White (Frederick, Md.) and the White got in on the scoring action with a marker 55 seconds later on an unassisted tally.
Randolph-Macon tacked on another pair of goals in the second stanza to build a 4-0 lead. First-year Cali Kujawa (Hampton, Va.) made the score 3-0 with a goal in the 18
th minute with the assist going to Giesken. Sophomore Llana Thach (Henrico, Va.) found the back of the cage in the 22
nd minute.
The Yellow Jackets got one more goal in the third quarter as it was recorded by junior Isabella McNulty (Midlothian, Va.) to push the score to 5-0.
Cedar Crest got on the board in the final minute of regulation on the first career goal by first-year
Avery Daku (Northampton, Pa./Catasauqua) to make the score 5-1, the eventual final.
Randolph-Macon outshot the Falcons 19-5 and had 12 penalty corners to Cedar Crest's three.
All three goalkeepers saw action for the Falcons. First-year
Kadee Schrader (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) made one save in 15 minutes of action. Junior
Brynn Rifino (Dover, Del./Smyrna) converted five stops in 15 minutes while first-year
Shelby Heater (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) picked up five saves in 30 minutes. Senior Kelsey Seiler (Midlothian, Va.) made one stop in goal for the Yellow Jackets in the win.
Cedar Crest (2-11 overall) will begin conference play with its next game at Keystone College on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. Randolph-Macon (8-5 overall) resumes conference play on Wednesday in a road tilt at Washington and Lee University at 7:00 p.m.
