ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team earned a 3-0 victory over Bryn Athyn College in a United East Conference-Skye Division match on Saturday afternoon on Homecoming Weekend and Senior Day. Prior to the match, the program honored its four seniors:
Ziah Melton (Allentown, Pa./William Allen), Ava Graspy,
Maddison Minyo (Covington, Pa./North Penn-Mansfield), and
Rebekka Sanchez-Castro (Columbia, Md./Atholton) in a special ceremony.
The Falcons won by set scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-17.
The Lions got out to the early advantage in set number one and went up by five, 11-5 after a Cedar Crest attack error. Later in the frame with the score 15-9 in favor of Bryn Athyn, the Falcons embarked on an 11-1 run to turn a six-point deficit into a four-point lead, 20-16. The Lions closed it to within one, 20-19, Cedar Crest outscored the visitors 5-3 over the remainder of the stanza for the 25-22 win.
The teams split the first 36 points of the second set, 18-18. The Falcons then finished on a 7-1 run, capped off by a kill from
Alexis Cummins (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) to give Cedar Crest the 25-19 triumph to go up 2-0.
The home team jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set after a service ace from Minyo. Bryn Athyn got back in the set and kept things close when they tied the frame at 17. The Falcons then went on an 8-0 run to close the stanza and capture the match in straight sets.
Grapsy paced Cedar Crest with a triple-double of 12 kills, 16 assists, and 10 digs. She also added three service aces. Her 16 assists pushed her north of 1,000 in her career. Minyo followed with eight kills, three service aces, two assists, and eight digs. Junior
Akashia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) chipped in seven kills and a block. First-year
Nikki Blair (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) had a match-high 10 assists while Sanchez-Castro guided the defense with 17 digs.
Cedar Crest (11-8 overall, 6-0 United East Conference-Skye Division) will play host to Cairn University in its regular season home finale on Wednesday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. Bryn Athyn (3-15 overall, 3-3 United East Conference-Skye Division) hosts Rosemont College in its next match on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
