Basketball Falls to Saint Elizabeth

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College basketball team suffered a 54-39 setback to Saint Elizabeth University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contest on Wednesday night at Lees Gymnasium.

The Falcons jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter, finished off by a layup by senior Ashley Wilson (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) with 7:03 play. The Eagles then closed the stanza on a 10-3 run to enter the second frame with a 10-all score.

The game remained tight in the second quarter, which featured four lead changes and three ties. With the score knotted at 17-17, first-year Haivynn Kovach (Virginia Beach, Va./Churchland) went on a personal 7-3 run for the Falcons to send the home team into the locker room with a 24-20 halftime advantage.

Saint Elizabeth came out strong in the third quarter had a 12-point swing, turning a six-point deficit into a six-point lead and started the final frame with a 34-28 lead.
The margin for the Eagles reached as many as 16 in the last frame after a layup from sophomore Kolby Lynch (Morristown, N.J.) with 2:18 to play in regulation made it a 52-36 score and would eventually come away with the 54-39 final.

Lynch concluded the contest with a game-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds, two assists, and six steals.  Sophomore Destiny Battle (East Orange, N.J.) pitched in 13 points, seven boards, two assists, and four steals while junior Aryanna Baytops (Newark, N.J.) contributed a double-double of 11 points and 10 boards. She also had an assist and a steal.

Kovach led the way for Cedar Crest with a season-high 18 points to go along with a rebound, an assist, and six steals. Sophomore Rachel Bilger (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Dublin) turned in a performance of 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Wilson finished with seven points, seven caroms, five assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Cedar Crest (1-14 overall, 1-12 CSAC) will hit the road for two-straight games, beginning Saturday, February 11 at Bryn Athyn College in a 1:00 p.m. tip. Saint Elizabeth (14-8 overall, 11-4 CSAC) returns home for a tilt with Wilson College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
