CHESTER, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Widener University on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons dropped game one in a 7-0 final and then answered back with an 11-3 game two victory.
Game One – Widener 7, Cedar Crest 0
Widener got on the board with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Becca Tiley (Chalfont, Pa.) doubled to left field to score senior Kaylin Johnson (Forest Hill, Md.) for the 1-0 lead.
The Pride tacked on a pair in the second on a two-run homer by sophomore Sam McCarthy (Logan Township, N.J.) to increase the margin to 3-0.
Widener added three more in the fifth to stretch the score to 6-0. The home team made it 4-0 when first-year Katelyn Tong (Lansdowne, Pa.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which was deep enough to score Johnson. The Pride then added another pair with a two-run home run by sophomore Leah DiGiandomenico (Brookhaven, Pa.).
Widener pushed one across in the sixth when Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk to increase the score to 7-0.
Junior Mikayla Fedele (Horsham, Pa.) picked up the win in the circle for the Pride. She tossed a complete-game shutout while striking out five and walking two.
Junior
Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) was tagged with the loss for the Falcons. She gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while fanning one and walking four.
All seven hits registered by the Pride came from different players.
Sophomore
Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro), senior
Brianna Lankford (Hanover, Pa./South Western Senior), first-year
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township), graduate student
Rachel Savini (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy), and junior
Kristina Cagle (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick) each had a hit for Cedar Crest.
Game Two – Cedar Crest 11, Widener 3
The Falcons were first to strike in game two with a single tally in the opening inning. Hasert drove in Mullen with a sacrifice fly to center field to put Cedar Crest on top, 1-0.
The visitors added a pair in the second frame. Graduate student
Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) scored on an error while junior
Kristina Cagle (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick) crossed home on a wild pitch to stretch the score to 3-0.
VanBuskirk was back in the action in the third when she reached first on an error in the outfield. The miscue allowed Kline and Hasert to touch home to make it 5-0.
The Falcons recorded three more tallies in the fourth. Mullen connected on a double to center field, which scored graduate student
Ashley Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland). Hasert followed as she singled in Mullen and Lankford reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Snyder to score for the 8-0 advantage.
Widener got its run in the home half of the fourth when Tong registered a base-hit to center field to bring home Tiley.
The teams then combined for five runs in the final frame. For Cedar Crest, Heller tripled in sophomore
Anaya Duncan (Baltimore, Md./Franklin). Mullen then stole second, which allowed Heller to score on the throw, and Hasert brought in Mullen with a base knock to right.
The Pride recorded two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 11-3 final.
Mundy was awarded the win in the circle for the Falcons. She struck out three and walked three in the complete-game victory.
Hasert led Cedar Crest, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Snyder was 3-for-5 with a run scored. Kline and Cagle each finished with two hits for the Falcons.
Cedar Crest (3-11 overall) will start conference play with its next games in a home doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 at noon and 2:00 p.m. Widener (5-9 overall) begins conference action on Saturday at home against Messiah University, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
