LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team lost twice on Thursday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, falling to Greensboro College, 16-6, before being edged by William Peace University, 4-3, to close the day's action.
Game One – Greensboro College 16, Cedar Crest 6
The Falcons started fast in game one with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Graduate student
Rachel Savini (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) connected on a two-out, three-run single, which scored first-year
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township), senior
Renee Snyder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), and graduate student
Ashley Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland). After a walk, graduate student
Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) singled through the right side, bringing home Savini to push the score to 4-0.
Greensboro responded with five runs in next half inning to grab the lead. First-year Raven Taylor (Laurel Hill, N.C.) reached on a fielding error to bring around senior Hannah French (Reidsville, N.C.). Senior Kailey Walker (Eden, N.C.) drew a bases loaded walk, sending senior Brooke Kinley (Lexington, N.C.) home. Senior Kassie Simmons (Gibsonville, N.C.) followed when she reached on a fielding error, which brought around two to score while sophomore Kelsey Craven (Ramseur, N.C.) finished the offense in the frame with a single through the left side, plating Walker for the Walker for the 5-4 advantage.
The teams traded single runs in the third and fourth innings. Kinley drove in French with a sacrifice fly to center field for the Pride while first-year
Taylor Faw (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) brought home Snyder with a double to left center in the third. In the fourth, Craven singled though the left side and senior
Brianna Lankford (Hanover, Pa./South Western Senior) sent home Heller with a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score, 7-6.
Greensboro added one in the fifth and eight in the seventh to come away with the 16-6 win.
Craven, French, and senior Olivia Davidson (Crofton, Md.) each registered three hits apiece for Greensboro.
Snyder paced Cedar Crest, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Simmons secured the victory in the circle. She gave up six runs on six hits while striking out six and walking four in the complete game effort.
Junior
Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) was tagged with the loss for the Falcons, allowing 16 runs on 17 hits.
Game Two – William Peace University 4, Cedar Crest 3
The Pacers got all its runs in the first inning. Sophomore Adanya Day (Lexington Park, Md.) doubled up the middle, which scored junior Logan Ayers (Oak City, N.C.) and first-year Angelina Jones (Windsor Locks, C.T.). Senior Anna Suggs (Tabor City, N.C.) then delivered a two-out, two run double to left, plating junior Preston Hawkins (Browns Summit, N.C.) and Day for the 4-0 lead.
The next four innings saw no scoring before the Falcons started its comeback in the sixth. Snyder began the frame with a single up the middle. Hasert followed with a base knock to center field, pushing Snyder to second. A single through the right side by Savini moved the runners over to load the bases for Cedar Crest.
After a pitching change by the Pacers, Snyder plated the first run for Cedar Crest on an RBI groundout from Faw. VanBuskirk followed with a single up the middle, which scored Hasert, and first-year
Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) fouled out to second base, which was deep enough to score Savini.
The Falcons were unable to push across the tying run and would be edged, 4-3.
Hawkins and Suggs recorded two hits each for William Peace.
Snyder and VanBuskirk led the Falcons with a pair of hits apiece.
Suggs was credited with the win for the Pacers. She walked one and struck out eight to secure her fifth triumph of the season.
Mundy took the loss for Cedar Crest, giving up four runs on six hits, while fanning three and walking four over seven innings.
Cedar Crest (1-5 overall) concludes its Spring Break Trip at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Friday, March 10 with a pair of games. The Falcons will square off against Medaille University at 3:00 p.m. before concluding its trip with a matchup against Regis College at 5:00 p.m.
