ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College softball team split a pair of conference games against Rosemont College on Wednesday afternoon at Cynthia L. Blaschak Field. The Falcons dropped game one in a 6-0 final and then posted a 13-7 victory in the nightcap for the split.
Game One – Rosemont 6, Cedar Crest 0
The Ravens put one on the board in the first inning as sophomore Olivia Hamme (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) doubled to left field, scoring senior Lauren Begg (New Hope, Pa.) for the 1-0 lead.
Rosemont added a pair in the third, beginning with a one-run single to center field from sophomore Kendyll Strohl (Northampton, Pa.). The base hit plated Begg. The last run of the frame came via a sacrifice fly by sophomore Tianna Ortiz (Mays Landing, N.J.). The fly ball was deep enough to bring in Strohl to push the score to 3-0.
The Ravens tacked on another in the fifth on as Begg scored again, this time on a single to third base from Hamme.
The visitors put a pair up in the seventh for the 6-0 final. Strohl doubled in Begg and Strohl would later come around to touch home on an error.
Begg led Rosemont with a 4-for-4 performance with four runs scored.
Graduate students
Ashley Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland),
Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge), and
Rachel Savini (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy), along with sophomore
Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) each had a hit for the Falcons.
Begg was victorious in the circle, throwing a complete game. She fanned three and walked just one.
Junior
Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) took the loss for Cedar Crest. She gave up six runs (four earned) on 10 hits while striking out two and walking one.
Game Two – Cedar Crest 13, Rosemont 7
Rosemont grabbed the lead early in game two with three runs in the top of the first. Senior Jade Gomez-Chavarria (Denver, Colo.) led the contest off with a home run to left field. The next tally came after Hamme stole second base and sophomore Kylee Kubitschek (Broomfield, Colo.) crossed home on the throw. The last scoring play of the inning came from a single to left field from graduate student Emily Bingman (Mifflin County, Pa.), which brought around Hamme.
The Ravens extended the margin to 4-0 in the second after a single down the left field line by Begg. The base-hit scored Kubitschek.
Cedar Crest got a run in the second inning after first-year
Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) connected on a single to center field, plating Savini to make the score 4-1.
The Falcons pulled to within one in the fourth on a two-run double to left center from Heller. The two-bagger plated Ferraro and Kline to cut the margin to one, 4-3.
Rosemont padded its advantage in the fifth, registering a pair, pushing the score to 6-3, but Cedar Crest answered back with a four-run home half to take the 7-6 advantage. VanBuskirk started things with a two-run double to left field, sending home senior
Brianna Lankford (Hanover, Pa./South Western Senior) along with first-year
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township). The Falcons tied the game at six on a double to left field coming from the bat of Kline. The two-bagger scored VanBuskirk. Cedar Crest took the lead on a double to right field by first-year
Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter). The play plated Kline.
Rosemont tied the contest in the sixth with a single run, but the Falcons pulled away with a six-run home half for the 13-7 win.
Lankford supplied the initial tally of the inning with a single to third base. The base-knock scored classmate
Reilly Mateljan (Friedens, Pa./Somerset Area). Savini followed with a two-run double up the middle to bring home Lankford and Hasert. Ferraro closed the scoring with a bases-clearing double to left field for the six-run victory.
Mundy took the win in the circle for the Falcons. She struck out a pair and walked two in the complete-game triumph. Begg was credited with the loss, surrendering six runs on eight hits over an inning and a third.
Cedar Crest pounded out 19 hits in the triumph. Ferraro and Kline had three apiece to guide the squad. Heller, Mateljan, Snyder, Hasert, Lankford, and VanBuskirk had two hits each while Savini had one to close the category.
Ferraro went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
Cedar Crest (13-13 overall, 10-2 CSAC) will embark on a six-game road trip, starting with a league doubleheader at Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday, April 22 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Rosemont (13-13, 8-2 CSAC) will next host Immaculata University in a non-conference twin bill on Thursday, April 20 starting at 5:00 p.m.
