Lacrosse Races Past Sweet Briar in CSAC Finale, 14-6

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Cedar Crest College lacrosse team raced past Sweet Briar College, 14-6, in its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) finale on Saturday afternoon at Thayer Field.

The Falcons opened the game on a 3-0 run to build an early advantage. First-year Kylah Demarest (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) assisted classmate Adriana Dias (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) for the opening marker just 48 seconds in. Sophomores Maddie Graham (Clayton, Del./Smyrna) and Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) followed with markers to finish off the run. The Vixens netted back-to-back goals on tallies from first-year Victoria Schofield (Towson, Md.) and first-year Sofia Martinez (Santa Barbara, Calif.) to make the score 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Cedar Crest shut out Sweet Briar in the second stanza, 3-0. Demarest set up the first two goals, the first to junior Adriana Hinkle (Palmerton, Pa./Homeschooled (played for Lehighton)) at the 10:40 mark and the second to Graham with 1:37 to go. Demarest rounded out the first half scoring with a goal with 33 ticks on the clock to extend the margin to four, 6-2.

The Falcons broke the contest open in the third quarter with a 4-0 run. Graham got the initial tally of the spurt, which was assisted by Demarest just 56 seconds in. Demarest deposited her second of the game, followed by goals from Graham and sophomore Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) to push the lead to 10-2. First-year Brooke Holley (Elkton, Md./Elkton) picked up the helper on the Jackson goal. First-year Ashley Privet (Nesconset, N.Y.) put an end to the run when she recorded a goal for the Vixens with six minutes remaining. Graham then registered back-to-back goals to round out the frame and push the lead to nine, 12-3.

The teams traded two-goal runs to begin the final frame. Sweet Briar recorded back-to-back goals to start the final stanza on markers from Martinez and junior Renee Taylor (York, Pa.). Cedar Crest got its markers from sophomore Abi Sipel (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), along with Graham to get the margin back up to nine, 14-5. Schofield deposited the last goal of the contest for Sweet Briar with 15 seconds remaining for the 14-6 final.

Junior Kayleigh Woomer (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) was credited with the win in goal for the Falcons, making five saves. Junior Kat Navarro (Carlsbad, Calif.) made 13 saves in the loss for the Vixens.

Graham tied a season-high in goals with seven to lead the way for Cedar Crest. Demarest turned in a season-high six points on a pair of goals and a season-high four helpers. Holley had two points on two assists while Jackson added two points on a pair of goals. Hinkle, Dias, and Sipel rounded out the point category with one goal each.

Martinez and Schofield led Sweet Briar with two goals apiece.

The Falcons nearly doubled up the Vixens in shots, 35-18, and were 25-for-30 on clears.

Cedar Crest had 16 ground balls in the game. Sipel had a team-high four. Demarest, Holley, and Jackson followed with two apiece. Graham, Hinkle, Dias, Woomer, first-year Nicole Guzman (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), and sophomore Rachel Bilger (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Dublin) closed the column with one each.

The Falcons recorded 16 caused turnovers. Sipel paced the squad with a season-high six. Holley, Graham, and Woomer pitched in two apiece, while Dias, Guzman, Bilger, and sophomore Ashley Large (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit) each had one.

Cedar Crest tallied seven draw controls. Demarest was credited with three and Graham had one. The final three were recorded by the team.

Cedar Crest (4-8 overall, 1-4 CSAC) will conclude its season on Sunday, April 30 in a home game against Trinity Washington University at 1:00 p.m. Sweet Briar (1-9 overall, 0-4 CSAC) finishes it season with the loss.
