ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Cedar Crest College basketball team registered its fourth-consecutive victory with a 65-46 win over Cairn University in a United East Conference-Skye Division contest on Wednesday night at Lees Gymnasium.
The Falcons raced out to a 9-0 lead in the opening quarter, which was finished off by a layup by first-year
Caylie Long (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove) with 3:14 on the clock. With the score 11-2, the Highlanders scored three-straight points to cut the deficit to six, 11-5, but Cedar Crest went onto score three points in a row to carry a 14-5 advantage into the second quarter.
The Falcons continued their strong play in the second stanza and began the frame on a 6-0 run, capped off by a free throw from graduate student
Nicole Sachman (Niles, Mich./Brandywine) to push the margin to 15, 20-5 with 7:08 remaining. After a bucket by Cairn, Cedar Crest embarked on a 15-2 run to open up a 35-9 lead. Following back-to-back baskets to trim the margin to 22, the Falcons concluded th quarter on a 7-0 run to carry a 42-13 lead into the half.
Cedar Crest led by as many as 30 in the third quarter and would enter the fourth up by 25, 52-27.
The Highlanders started the fourth quarter on a 16-4 run to cut the margin to 13, 56-43, after a layup from first-year T'miya Bryant (Raleigh, N.C.) with 4:07 remaining in regulation. That is as close as Cairn would get as the Falcons closed on a 6-0 run for the 19-point win, 65-46.
Junior
Bryanna Rivera (Reading, Pa./Greenfield (Mass.)) tallied a team-high 18 points and added four rebounds, two assists, and four steals to guide Cedar Crest. Long tallied 15 points, six caroms, four assists, two steals, and two blocks. First-year
Megan Perrine (Mount Vision, N.Y./Gilbertsville-Mount Upton) added 13 points, five boards, and one assist. Sachman chipped in eight points, five rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Sophomore
Jordan McGhee (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas Cove) contributed seven points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Junior
Rachel Bilger (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Dublin) recorded four points, eight rebounds, five assists, and a steal.
First-year Makayla Raines (Jonesboro, Ga.) registered a game-high 23 points for Cairn in the loss.
Cedar Crest (5-6, 4-4 United East-Skye Division) will face off against Rosemont College on the road on Saturday, January 13 starting at 1:00 p.m. Cairn (7-6 overall, 3-4 United East-Skye Division) will next host Saint Elizabeth University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.Â
