LA PLUME, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped by Keystone College in a 70-59 loss in a United East Conference-Skye Division contest on Saturday afternoon at the Gambal Athletic Center.
The Falcons started the game with a 6-0 run, finished off by a layup from sophomore
Jordan McGhee (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas Cove) with 7:42 left on the clock. The Giants answered back with seven straight points as the run was capped with a triple by junior Malaysia Bryant (Harlem, N.Y.) with 6:07 remaining. Nicole Sachman (Niles, Mich./Brandywine), Keystone netted five straight points to extend the margin to four, 12-8. The teams traded buckets on four straight possessions to make the score 16-12 in favor of the Giants. Keystone then converted two straight buckets to stretch the lead to eight, 20-12, but the Falcons finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to pull to within two, 20-18 at the end of the opening stanza.
The Giants went on an 8-2 run to begin the second frame to build an eight-point advantage, 28-20 with 5:27 left in the half. Cedar Crest chipped away at the deficit with a 7-2 scoring run to enter the locker room at the break down by three, 30-27.
The Falcons regained the lead, 31-30, with back-to-back buckets to open the third quarter, the second coming on a jump shot from first-year
Caylie Long (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove) with 8:33 on the clock. Keystone put together a 6-0 run to jump back in front, 36-31, after a pair of free throws by Bryant. Later in the frame with the score 40-37 in favor of the Giants, Keystone went on a 9-2 run to stretch the margin to double digits, 49-37, following a three-pointer by sophomore Angelise Sanchez (Atlanta, Ga.) with 2:19 left on the clock. Cedar Crest trimmed the lead to single digits and ended the third quarter down by nine, 51-42.
The Giants scored on two straight possessions at the start of the fourth frame to extend its lead to 13, 55-42. The Falcons responded with four straight points of its own to cut the deficit to nine, 55-46, after a layup by Long with 6:03 left in regulation. Cedar Crest got to within as close as seven points with under three minutes left, 57-50, but Keystone outscored the Falcons 13-9 over the time left to end the game with the 11-point win, 70-59.
Cedar Crest got a game-high 23 points from Long, her third straight game with 20-plus points. The first-year shot 11-for-18 from the floor and added six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Sachman recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also dished out five assists and picked up a pair of steals. First-year
Megan Perrine (Mount Vision, N.Y./Gilbertsville-Mount Upton) was the final Falcon with double-digit points, recording 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal.
Junior Bry Hicks (Lancaster, Pa.) led Keystone with 15 points, eight boards, three blocks, one assist, and one steal. First-year Kameryn Cortinas (Los Banos, Calif.) tallied 15 points, five caroms, and two assists. Senior Riley Berry (Margate, Fla.) registered 13 points, five steals, and three assists. Bryant was the last player in double figures, collecting 11 points, two rebounds, one assist, and four steals.
Cedar Crest (7-7 overall, 6-5 United East-Skye Division) will remain on the road and will travel to Wilson College for a conference contest on Tuesday, January 23 at 6:00 p.m. Keystone (6-11 overall, 4-6 United East-Skye Division) will next host Clarks Summit University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
