Field Hockey Clips Lancaster Bible in Final Minutes to Collect First League Win

LANCASTER, Pa. – A goal from senior Zakiyyah Sabir (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia E&T) with 1:32 remaining in regulation was the difference in Cedar Crest College field hockey's 2-1 win over Lancaster Bible College in United East Conference action on Saturday morning at Donald H. Funk Field.

The teams played a scoreless first half and it was the Chargers to break through in the third quarter with a marker from sophomore Gabby Dunlap (Bloomsburg, Pa.) at 42:33. Senior Alexis Gilbert (Sellersville, Pa.) had the assist on the goal. Prior to the goal by Dunlap, sophomore Sydney Jeker (Sciota, Pa./Pleasant Valley) was awarded a penalty stroke for the Falcons, but was unable to find the back of the cage at 39:48.

Cedar Crest knotted the contest at one goal apiece when junior Avery Daku (Northampton, Pa./Catasauqua) registered her first goal of the season at 55:55, which was set up by junior Olivia Horninger (Friedens, Pa./Northern Lehigh).

The Falcons netted the game-winner when Sabir put a shot past junior Amanda Hoover (Bowmansville, Pa.) with just over a minute a half to play in regulation to send Cedar Crest to the win column. Junior Avery Daku (Northampton, Pa./Catasauqua) was credited with the helper on the game-winning goal in the 2-1 final.

The Falcons doubled up Lancaster Bible, 14-7, in the shot category and had six penalty corners to the Chargers' two.

Sophomore Shelby Heater (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) picked up two saves in the triumph for Cedar Crest. Hoover made three stops for Lancaster Bible.

Cedar Crest (4-12 overall, 1-3 United East) will host Southern Virginia University in its non-conference finale on Wednesday, October 23 at 5:00 p.m. Lancaster Bible (2-13 overall, 0-4 United East) will remain home for a non-league contest against Roberts Wesleyan University on Monday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m.
