Volleyball Breezes By Wilson on Senior Day

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team took down Wilson College in straight sets, 3-0, in a United East Conference match on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day and Homecoming.

Prior to the match, the program honored its four seniors Akashia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute), Alexis Cummins (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge), Daja Jackson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Gilbert (Ariz.)), and Liberty Jackson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Gilbert (Ariz.)) in a special ceremony.

The Falcons won the match by set scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-13.

After the Phoenix tied the opening set at three, the Falcons went on an 11-2 run to build a 14-5 lead. Wilson responded with a 7-1 run to trim the Cedar Crest margin to three, 15-12. The Falcons finished the set on a 10-4 run to win the frame, 25-16.

The home squad jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the second set and would hold a 15-8 advantage later in the stanza. The Phoenix knotted the score at 15 following a 7-0 run. Cedar Crest would go up by four, 22-18, and then a 3-0 mini-run cut the Falcon margin to one, 22-21. The home team then closed on a 3-1 spurt to capture the set, 25-22.

Cedar Crest doubled up Wilson 10-5 in the early going of set number three. After the Phoenix made the score 16-10, the Falcons embarked on a 7-0 run to push the margin to 13, 23-10, and would eventually come away with a 25-13 third-set victory.

Cedar Crest was led by graduate student Ziah Melton (Allentown, Pa./William Allen), Johnson, and junior Ellise Everett (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) had eight kills each. D. Jackson had a match-high four service aces. Johnson and sophomore Tianlly Davila (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) registered a team-best two blocks. Davilla also turned in 28 assists and 11 digs. Graduate student Rebekka Sanchez-Castro (Columbia, Md./Atholton) recorded a match-high 17 digs.

Senior Niki Schussler (Chambersburg, Pa.) had a team-high seven kills for Wilson.

Cedar Crest (8-13 overall, 3-3 United East) will stay home for a conference tilt on Wednesday, October 23 against the University of Valley Forge at 7:00 p.m. Wilson (3-17 overall, 2-4 United East) returns home for a league match against Notre Dame of Maryland University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
