WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team fell to Gallaudet University in a 3-0 final in a United East Conference match on Wednesday evening.
The Bison captured the match by scores of 25-6, 25-13, and 25-5.
Gallaudet started the first set fast on a 16-2 run. After a kill from senior
Ziah Melton (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) to make the score 16-3, the Bison rattled off a 9-3 run to win the first set by a score of 25-6.
The Falcons got out to a 4-3 lead in the second set before Gallaudet embarked on a 7-1 run to build a 10-5 advantage. The Bison pushed its margin to as many as 12 (22-10) and would come away with the 25-13 set victory.
Gallaudet got out to a 19-1 lead in the third set. After back-to-back points from Cedar Crest, the Bison closed the set on a 6-2 run to take the set 25-5 and the match in straight sets.
Graduate student
Ziah Melton (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) paced the Falcons with five kills. Sanchez-Castro followed with two. Junior
Ellise Everett (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) and senior
Liberty Jackson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Gilbert (Ariz.)) each had one. Sophomore
Tianlly Davila (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) handed out a team-high nine assists and added four digs. Senior
Daja Jackson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Gilbert (Ariz.)) turned in a team-high five digs and pitched in one service ace. Senior
Akashia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) and Everett guided the team with two blocks apiece while Melton added one.
Brielle Worley (Amarillo, Texas) led Gallaudet with a match-high 13 kills.
Cedar Crest (6-12 overall, 1-2 United East) will face Penn State Berks in its next match at home on Saturday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m. Gallaudet (18-4 overall, 3-0 United East) will have a quick turnaround as it hosts Washington Adventist on Thursday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m.
