WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Cedar Crest College basketball team topped Trinity Washington University, 62-48, in a non-conference tilt on Thursday night at the Trinity Center.
The Falcons began the first quarter on a 7-0 run, capped off by a layup by sophomore
Caylie Long (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove) with 6:08. The Tigers answered back with five consecutive points to trim the margin to two, 7-5. After Cedar Crest went up 9-5, Trinity Washington rattled off a 6-0 spurt to pull in front, 11-9. The rest of the quarter was tight as the Falcons ended the opening 10 minutes with a 14-13 lead.
The second stanza was closely contested with neither team holding more than a four-point advantage. It was Cedar Crest that held a 23-21 lead at the half.
The Tigers outscored the Falcons 11-5 over the first 3:34 of the third quarter to grab a 32-28 advantage. Cedar Crest closed the frame on a 14-3 run to carry a 42-35 lead into the final quarter.
After an opening basket from the Tigers to start the fourth quarter, the Falcons embarked on a 12-0 run to go up 17, 54-37. Trinity Washington cut the deficit to 11 in the final two minutes of regulation, but Cedar Crest came out victorious, 62-48.
The Falcons shot 34.4 percent from the floor compared to 32.8 percent for the Tigers. Cedar Crest had the edge in points in the paint (32-20), second chance points (13-9), points off turnovers (16-6), and fast break points (13-2).
Long registered a team-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds, two blocks, and three steals for the Falcons. Senior
Rachel Bilger (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Dublin) followed with 13 points, nine boards, and two assists. Senior
Bryanna Rivera (Reading, Pa./Greenfield (Mass.)) collected 12 points, six rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Junior
Kyleigh Monk (Havre de Grace, Md./John Carroll) was the final Cedar Crest player with double-digit points, tallying 11 points in addition to five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. First-year
Maliya Gonzalez (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) rounded out the box score for the vistors with six points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Senior Taryn Yancey (Harrisburg, Pa.) recorded a game-high 25 points in addition to four rebounds, one block and three steals for Trinty Washington. Sophomore Hermela Shimels (Silver Spring, Md.) was the only other player to hit double-digit points with 15 points, 11 boards, and one steal.
Cedar Crest (3-4 overall) will enter its winter break and will next play on Saturday, January 4 at the University of Valley Forge at 1:00 p.m. Trinity Washington (3-7 overall) returns to action on Saturday, December 14 in a home game against Goucher College tipping off at 1:00 p.m.
