Fourth Quarter Surge Sinks Basketball at St. Mary’s

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Cedar Crest College basketball team suffered an 84-66 loss to St. Mary's College of Maryland in a United East Conference contest at the MPOARC Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons began the game on a 5-0 run after a jump shot from sophomore Megan Perrine (Mount Vision, N.Y./Gilbertsville-Mount Upton) and a triple from senior Bryanna Rivera (Reading, Pa./Greenfield (Mass.)). The Seahawks responded with a 13-0 run to build an eight-point advantage, 13-5. Cedar Crest pulled to within six, 15-9, with a basket by junior Kyleigh Monk (Havre de Grace, Md./John Carroll) with 39 seconds left in the quarter, but it was St. Mary's that held a 17-9 lead at the end of one.

The home team led by as many as 10 points, 27-17, with 3:47 remaining in the second stanza, but the Falcons closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to trim the deficit to just one, 29-28, at the half.

With the score knotted at 30 in the third frame, Cedar Crest embarked on a 14-7 run to build a 44-37 lead with 4:20 to go. The Seahawks finished the stanza on a 14-7 run of their own to tie the contest at 51 entering the final quarter.

The Falcons hung tough for the first five minutes of the final quarter, but after sophomore Caylie Long (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove) was credited with her fifth foul with 5:16 to play, St. Mary's took a two-point lead and stretched it to as many as 18, concluding the game with an 18-point win, 84-66.

The Seahawks had five student-athletes with double-digit points. Sophomore Olivia Liszt (Baltimore, Md.) paced St. Mary's with 19 points, nine rebounds, and one steal. Sophomore Ji-Young Hartman (Vienna, Va.) followed with 14 points and one steal. Junior Tramarie Mobray (Glen Burnie, Md.) contributed 13 points, five boards, nine assists, and one steal. Junior Samantha Blaylock (Ijamsville, Md.) registered 13 points, one rebound, three assists, and two steals. First-year Keira Mason (Brandywine, Md.) had 12 points, six boards, one assist, and one block.

Cedar Crest had three student-athletes with double-digit scoring outputs. Rivera tallied 19 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Long recorded 16 points, five boards, four assists, and two steals. Monk pitched in 14 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

Cedar Crest (1-4 overall, 0-3 United East) will next play at Cairn University on Tuesday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m. St. Mary's College of Maryland (6-3 overall, 3-0 United East) will begin a two-game road trip beginning at Stevenson University on Saturday, December 14 at 2:00 p.m.
