NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team was tripped by Penn College in a 2-0 final and Penn State Abington by a 6-2 score on Thursday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
Game One – Penn College 2, Cedar Crest 0
The contest was scoreless for the first five innings.
The Wildcats got both of its runs in the sixth. Senior Ivvy Morder (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) singled up the middle to bring around classmate Margaret Mangene (Boalsburg, Pa.) and then sophomore Lexi Snyder (Hegins, Pa.) connected on a base hit through the left side to score first-year Grace Lorson (Williamsport, Pa.) for the 2-0 final.
Junior Mackenzie Weaver (Williamsport, Pa.) recorded the win the circle for Penn College. She tossed a two-hit, complete game shutout and tallied eight strikeouts. Junior
BB Aquila (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was credited with the loss, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one.
Snyder led the Wildcats, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Juniors
Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) and
Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) finished with one hit each for the Falcons.
Game Two – Penn State Abington 6, Cedar Crest 2
Cedar Crest registered both of its runs in the first inning. First-year
Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior) scored on a passed ball while junior
Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) drove a ball out to center field, which was deep enough to bring home sophomore Natlie Hasert on the sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0.
Penn State Abington cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the first frame when junior Callie Chambers (Baltimore, Md.) doubled in first-year Marlena Hacker (Warrington, Pa.) to trim the Falcons' lead to one, 2-1.
The next three innings featured no scoring.
The Nittany Lions then struck for five runs in the fifth inning to re-gain the advantage and come away with the 6-2 win.
Hacker, Chambers, and first-year Ava Livingston (Atco, N.J.) tallied two hits apiece.
Hasert paced Cedar Crest at the dish, going a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored. Kline and Mullen each picked up a hit to close the category for the Falcons.
First-year Paula Casale (Old Bridge, N.J.) was the winning pitcher for Penn State Abington. She surrendered two runs on three hits while fanning five and walking three. Senior
Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) took the loss for the Falcons. She gave up five runs on eight hits to go along with two strikeouts.
Cedar Crest (0-6 overall) will conclude its Spring Break trip with a pair of games on Friday, March 8. The Falcons will face Misericordia University at 9:00 a.m. followed by a matchup with Albion College at 11:00 a.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
