CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College softball team concluded its season with a pair of losses to Wilson College in a United East Conference-Skye Division doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
The Phoenix took the first game 12-2 in five innings and then Wilson captured game two in a 5-2 final.
Game One – Wilson 12, Cedar Crest 2 (Five Innings)
Cedar Crest got on the board with one run in the top of the first inning. Junior
Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) reached on a throwing error, which allowed sophomore
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) to cross home to put the Falcons on top, 1-0.
Wilson pulled in front with a pair of tallies in the home half of the first. Senior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, Wash.) connected on a base hit to right field to bring around first-year Lindsey Dalenberg (Niles, Mich.). Junior Payton Kendall (McConnellsburg, Pa.) also recorded a single to right field, scoring Barker to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Phoenix.
Cedar Crest tied the contest in the second after sophomore
Taylor Faw (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) delivered a base knock to left field. The single brought home classmate
Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) to knot the game at two.
The home team broke the contest open with nine runs in the second frame and then tacked on one in the third for the 12-2 final.
First-year Rylee Piper (Newville, Pa.) picked up the triumph in the circle for Wilson. She tossed three innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out five.
Junior
BB Aquila (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was given the loss for the Falcons. She surrendered 11 runs on nine hits while walking three over 1.2 innings. Senior
Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) pitched the final 2.1 innings and gave up one run on three hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Barker led the Phoenix at the dish, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Hasert collected two hits to lead Cedar Crest to go along with a run scored. First-year
Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior) went 1-for-3, Ferraro was 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Faw rounded out the hit column, going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Game Two – Wilson 5, Cedar Crest 2
After a scoreless first frame, Wilson struck for three runs in the second. Junior Madison Heuer (Greencastle, Pa.) tripled to left center field, which helped bring home first-year Emma-Leigh Gillingham (Gettysburg, Pa.). The last pair of runs of the inning came on a two-run single to right field from the bat of senior Haiden Brookens (Fayetteville, Pa.). The base hit scored Dalenberg and Heuer to make the score 3-0.
The Phoenix added another tally in the third on a double to right center from sophomore Madison Briggs (Lock Haven, Pa.). The two-bagger plated first-year Jenna Dwyer (Bel Air, Md.) to extend the margin to 4-0.
The Falcons pushed one run across in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by senior
Kristina Cagle (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick), which sent Mullen home to cut the deficit to three, 4-1.
Wilson recorded one final marker in the sixth on a single from senior Haley Privett (Fayetteville, Pa.) to score Brookens for the 5-1 lead.
Cedar Crest registered one run in the seventh for the 6-1 final on a single to left field from the bat of Gronkowski, allowing Mundy to touch home.
Piper secured her second win of the day, throwing 3.2 innings and giving up one run on five hits while fanning three and walking just one.
Mundy was given the loss for the Falcons. The senior gave up five runs on eight hits in addition to tallying three strikeouts and six walks.
Brookens guided the Phoenix, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
Gronkowski was the hit leader for Cedar Crest, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Hasert, junior
Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter), Ferraro, junior
Anaya Duncan (Baltimore, Md./Franklin), and Mundy had one hit apiece.
Cedar Crest finishes it season with a 4-24 overall record (4-12 United East-Skye Division). Wilson (24-10 overall, 13-3 United East-Skye Division) has claimed the No. 1 seed in the Skye Division and will begin the United East Conference Championship Tournament on Friday, May 3.
