ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College softball team salvaged a split with Clarks Summit University in a United East Conference-Skye Division doubleheader at Cynthia L. Blaschak Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Defenders captured game one by an 8-4 score and then senior
Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) tossed a no-hitter in a 5-0 win for the Falcons in game two.
Game One – Clarks Summit 8, Cedar Crest 4
Clarks Summit pushed one run across in the top of the first inning on a double down the left field line by senior Sara Castillo (Schenectady, N.Y.), which scored sophomore Haley Brag (Millville, N.J.) to put the Lady Defenders up, 1-0.
Cedar Crest answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to left field by junior
Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter). The fly ball scored sophomore
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) to knot the score at one.
Clarks Summit re-gained the lead in the second frame. Senior Davi Ort (Granville, Pa.) drove in junior Julianna Baker (Freeland, Pa.) with a base hit to left field while Brag brought home first-year Molly Deshetsky with another base hit to left for the 3-1 advantage.
The Falcons recorded a pair of runs in the fourth to tie the game at three. Kline crossed home on a fielding error while first-year
Brooke Trentler (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) connected on a single to right field to bring home sophomore
Taylor Faw (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie).
The Lady Defenders broke the tie with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to build a 7-3 advantage.
The teams then traded runs in the seventh. Deshetsky sent home first-year Kylee Miller (Chambersburg, Pa.) with a single to right field for Clarks Summit. First-year
Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior) delivered the last tally with an infield base hit. The single plated Trentler.
Miller was the victorious pitcher, giving up four runs on seven hits, while striking out seven and walking three.
Junior
BB Aquila (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was tagged with the loss, surrendering six runs (four earned) on eight hits. She also recorded two strikeouts and had a pair of walks. Mundy tossed the last two innings and gave up two runs on three hits. The senior also picked up a strikeout.
Brag, Atkins, and Deshetsky had two hits apiece for the Lady Defenders.
Kline and Trentler guided Cedar Crest with 2-for-3 games at the plate with an RBI and a run scored each.
Game Two – Cedar Crest 5, Clarks Summit 0
The Falcons jumped on the scoreboard in the nightcap, tallying a single run in the first inning on a single by Gronkowski. The base hit scored Hasert to give Cedar Crest the early 1-0 advantage.
Hasert was back in the action in the second when she connected on a base hit to center field, which brought around sophomore
Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter). Gronkowski then executed a sacrifice bunt to score senior
Anaya Duncan (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) to give the Falcons the 3-0 lead.
Cedar Crest tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to extend its margin to 5-0, the eventual final. Trentler doubled to right field, which helped plate Duncan. The final run came after Trentler touched home following a strikeout and stolen base attempt. She came home on the throw.
Mundy no-hit the Lady Defenders, tossing seven innings. She walked two and walked three in the Falcons' first win of the season.
Hasert led Cedar Crest at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Gronkowski followed with a 2-for-3 game with two RBI. Duncan and Trentler had two hits apiece to close out the Falcons with multiple hits.
Cedar Crest (1-13 overall, 1-5 United East-Skye Division) returns to action on Monday, April 8 at Centenary University in a non-league doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. Clarks Summit (7-9-1 overall, 1-1 United East-Skye Division) will next play Monday as the Lady Defenders host Wilson College in a conference twinbill beginning at 3:15 p.m.
