CALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College tennis team was defeated by Clarks Summit University in a 7-2 final on Tuesday afternoon in a United East Conference-Skye Division match at home.
The Lady Defenders started the match with a sweep of doubles play. The Falcons' first doubles team of senior
Lily Spagnola (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) and junior
Grace Nieman (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) fell to seniors Naomi Sadowitz (Miyakonojo, Japan) and Melanie Stabler (Lockport, N.Y.), 8-5. Juniors Ella Simmons (Hancock, N.Y.) and Rachael Chastain (South Abington Township, Pa.) defeated junior
Corinne O'Connor (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and senior
Megan Fiedler (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) at the No. 2 spot, 8-2. Senior Natasha Karp (Hidden Valley Lake, Ca.) and first-year Lydia Stanley (Markham, Va.) picked up Clarks Summit's last win in doubles by default at No. 3 doubles.
Spagnola opened singles play and fell to Sadowitz at first singles (6-0, 6-0). Stabler defeated Fiedler at the No. 2 spot (6-1,6-1). Simmons took down O'Connor at the third singles 6-1 and 6-4. Nieman secured the Cedar Crest's first win of the day over Karp at the No. 4 spot (6-0, 6-0). First-year
Camber Beverage (Taylor, Pa./Riverside) picked for the Falcons' second win over Chastain at the fifth singles spot, 6-3 and 6-3. Stanley picked up the last win for the Lady Defenders by default.
Cedar Crest (1-9 overall, 0-1 United East-Skye Division) will return to the courts away against Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m. Clarks Summit (1-8 overall, 1-3 United East-Skye Division) will return home against Penn State Berks on Thursday, April 11 at 12:00 p.m.
