ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Lycoming College in its season opener on Friday night in non-conference action at the FalconPlex.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Warriors were first to strike in the second stanza as first-year Lacy Eckard (Muncy, Pa.) deflected in a shot in front of the cage off a cross pass from junior Riley Marines (East Berlin, Pa.) to put Lycoming ahead, 1-0, in the 22
nd minute.
The Falcons tied the contest with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation as sophomore
Sydney Jeker (Sciota, Pa./Pleasant Valley) delivered a pass up the middle which found junior
Olivia Wanner (Lyons, Pa./Kutztown Area) and Wanner put home the shot to knot the game at one.
In the overtime period, the Warriors wasted little time as first-year Riley Hackett (Hampstead, Md.) netted the game-winner just 38 seconds into the extra period to give Lycoming the 2-1 victory.
The visitors held a 15-4 advantage in shots while Cedar Crest had five penalty corners to the Warriors' two.
Junior Isabella Bobé (York Springs, Pa.) made two saves in goal in the win for Lycoming. Sophomore
Shelby Heater (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) converted five stops in the setback for the Falcons.
Cedar Crest (0-1 overall) will have a quick turnaround as the Falcons host Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday, August 31 at 3:00 p.m. Lycoming (1-0 overall) will also return to action on Saturday as it welcomes in Penn State Harrisburg for a 3:00 p.m. tilt.
