ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team fell to Gwynedd Mercy University by a 3-0 final score in a non-league contest on Saturday afternoon at the FalconPlex.
Senior Laura Filchner (Bath, Pa.) opened the scoring at the 6:35 mark when she scored on a scrum in front of the net. Sophomore Leany Santana (Wilmington, Del.) picked up the helper on the goal.
From there, Gwynedd Mercy scored two more unanswered goals (44:04 and 54:33) from the sticks of junior Mackenzie Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Santana to secure the victory.
At the 48:00-minute mark, the Falcons were awarded a penalty stroke which was taken by junior
Olivia Horninger (Friedens, Pa./Northern Lehigh) and saved by senior Morgan Lawless (Bristol, Pa.).
In goal, sophomore
Shelby Heater (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) registered 10 saves in the loss for Cedar Crest. Lawless converted three stops in the shutout.
The Griffins had a 20-3 advantage in the shot category and doubled up the Falcons in penalty corners, 8-4. Horninger registered a pair of shots while sophomore
Sydney Jeker (Sciota, Pa./Pleasant Valley) had the other.

Ashley Large (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and sophomore
Reagan Ferst (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) each recorded a defensive save for Cedar Crest.
Cedar Crest (0-2 overall) will hit the road for a non-conference game at King's College (Pa.) on Wednesday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m. Gwynedd Mercy (1-1 overall) will travel to take on Delaware Valley University on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
