CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — The Cedar Crest College soccer team fell in a 3-1 road defeat at Wilson College on Saturday in United East Conference play.
The first half began with the Falcons and the Phoenix each establishing their presence on the field. Junior
Avery Kramer (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) tested the Wilson goalkeeper, first-year year Bella Scarlato, early with a shot at 3:54, but Scarlato made the save. Cedar Crest continued to apply pressure, earning a corner kick in the 12th minute.
Defensively, senior
Bella Bozen (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township), made a crucial save on a bottom-left attempt by first year Breanna Oliviero in the 21st minute to keep the Phoenix from taking the lead. The Falcons closed the half holding Wilson scoreless, maintaining a 0-0 tie at the end of the first half.
The second half commenced with an impactful moment for Cedar Crest as senior
Lauren Davis (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) found the back of the net in the 56th minute, putting the Falcons ahead 1-0. Bozen contributed crucial saves following the goal, maintaining the lead amidst Wilson's offensive pressure, including a notable save against junior Annie Smith.
However, Wilson equalized in the 68th minute through a goal by Smith. The Phoenix gained momentum, scoring twice more, with senior Halley Shaffer finding the net, assisted by Smith and later by senior Becca Cordell. First-year
Laila Stevenson's (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) shot in the 85th minute was saved as the Falcons' attempts to close the deficit were thwarted. The half concluded with Wilson leading 3-1.
Bozen recorded five saves during 90 minutes of play, facing 24 shots. Stevenson attempted two shots, with one being on target. Davis scored the team's only goal from her single shot. Kramer contributed with one shot on goal.
Smith was pivotal for Wilson, recording both a goal and an assist, alongside six shots with three on target. Shaffer contributed significantly, netting two goals, including the game-winner, from eight shots. Oliviero was active in the attack, registering seven shots, with three on goal, highlighting her offensive presence.
Looking ahead, Cedar Crest (2-8-0 overall, 1-2-0 United East) will host Penn State Abington on Tuesday October 7, with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m. The match will take place in Allentown, Pa., as the Falcons aim to defend their home turf. While Wilson College (3-6-2 overall, 1-2-0 United East) will host Cairn University on Tuesday October 7, with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
