ABINGTON, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Penn State Abington in a conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts.
The Falcons' first doubles pair of first-year
Raury Barnard (Elkton, Md./Northeast) and senior
Corinne O'Connor (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) fell to sophomore Laurie Flemming (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior Isabella DePorre (Hickory, N.C.), 6-0. Juniors Morgan Schaefer (Warrington, Pa.) and Soniyah Youngblood (Philadelphia, Pa.) defeated sophomores
Grace Huff (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) and
Cam Beverage (Taylor, Pa./Riverside) with a score of 6-3 at second doubles. Senior
Gracelynn Pauley (New Oxford, Pa./South Western) and sophomore
Aleice Cherry (Raleigh, N.C./Oscar Smith) won by default at No. 3 doubles, but it was the Nittany Lions grabbing the doubles point to go up 1-0.
Abington captured all six singles matches for the sweep. Barnard opened singles play and was defeated by Flemming at first singles by 6-1, 6-1 scores. O'Connor was taken down by DePorre at the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-1. Huff fell to Youngblood by a 6-4, 6-3, 10-8 final score at third singles. Schaefer defeated Beverage at the No. 4 spot, 6-4 and 6-2. First-year Maman Saly Mbengue (Dakar, Senegal) got by Pauley at fifth singles by 6-2, 6-0 scores. Sophomore Sevara Tursunboeva (Philadelphia, Pa.) defeated Cherry at No. 6 in a 6-1, 6-3 final.
Cedar Crest (0-5 overall, 0-3 United East) will travel to take on Bryn Athyn College on Saturday, April 5 at 12:00 p.m. Penn State Abington (3-4 overall, 1-1 United East) will resume to action on Sunday, March 30 as they host McDaniel College starting at 11:00 a.m.
