ABINGTON, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College softball team salvaged a split with Penn State Abington in a United East Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.
After dropping game one, 9-3, the Falcons doubled up the Nittany Lions, 4-2, in the nightcap.
Game One – Penn State Abington 9, Cedar Crest 3
Penn State Abington got on the board with a three-spot in the first inning. Senior Hailey Gamble (Wernersville, Pa.) scored on a wild pitch and then junior Jill Thomas (Levittown, Pa.) connected on a two-run double to left field to make the score 3-0.
Cedar Crest came back with a run of its own in the second frame when first-year
Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) crossed home on a sacrifice fly by classmate
Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) to trim the deficit to two, 3-1.
The Nittany Lions plated a pair of runs in the third on a sacrifice fly and then a single through the left side to bring home a tally to extend the margin to four, 5-1.
The Falcons got a run back in the fourth on an RBI groundout from first-year
Abby Adams (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland). Senior
Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) touched home on the play to make it a three-run ballgame, 5-2.
Penn State Abington recorded three runs in the fourth and then tacked on one in the fifth to push the score to 9-2.
Cedar Crest plated its final run in the sixth when junior
Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) scored on a sacrifice bunt from Adams for the 9-3 final score.
Senior Gretchen Yanns (Odenton, Md.) was the winning pitcher for the Nittany Lions, recording seven strikeouts and two walks over seven innings of work.
First-year
Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) went three innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking one.
Sophomore Lainey Scotese (Warminster, Pa.) went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for Penn State Abington.
Senior
Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) led the Falcons with two hits while Ferraro, Kline, sophomore
Brooke Trentler (Whiteford, Md./North Harford), and first-year
Jane Armbruster (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) each had one.
Game Two – Cedar Crest 4, Penn State Abington 2
Following two scoreless innings, Cedar Crest struck for three runs in the top of the third. Mullen drove in junior
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) with a sacrifice fly to center field. Mastillo followed with a double to center field, which brought home Kline. Mastillo plated the final run for the Falcons after Adams reached on an error to make it 3-0.
The Nittany Lions tallied a pair of runs in the home half of the third. Junior Emily Foxhill (Langhorne, Pa.) came in to score on a double by Gamble and then sophomore Isabella Antosiewicz (Hamilton, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring around Gamble to cut the Cedar Crest lead to one, 3-2.
The Falcons added one in the fourth when Kline delivered a base-hit to right field, which brought home sophomore
Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior) for the 4-2 score, the eventual final.
First-year
Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) tossed a complete game victory for the Falcons, only allowing three hits while striking out one in the triumph.
Sophomore Paula Casale (Old Bridge, N.J.) gave up four runs (two earned) on nine hits while fanning two and walking two over five innings in the loss.
First-year
Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) finished game two a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Hasert collected two hits while Kline, Mastillo, Adams, and Trentler closed the column with one apiece.
Gamble and Yanss each had a hit for Penn State Abington in game two.
Cedar Crest (16-17 overall, 8-3 United East) stays on the road for a doubleheader at Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday, April 19 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Penn State Abington (12-18 overall, 7-5 United East) remains at home to host Penn State Brandywine on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
