MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The No. 6 seed Cedar Crest College softball team was eliminated from the United East Conference Tournament, losing a pair of games at third-seeded Penn State Harrisburg on Friday afternoon at Courtney Pollock Memorial Field. The Falcons lost game one, 10-2 in six innings and then fell in game two by an 11-1 final.
Game One – Penn State Harrisburg 10, Cedar Crest 2 (Six Innings)
The Falcons plated a pair of runs in the top of the second inning after first-year
Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) reached on a throwing error. The miscue allowed senior
Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) and first-year
Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) to cross home for the 2-0 lead.
The Lions grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third, recording six runs to grab the four-run advantage, 6-2.
Penn State Harrisburg tallied two runs in the fourth to extend its margin. Senior Madelyn Lehigh (Harrisburg, Pa.) connected on a single down the left field line to bring around junior Mackenzie Fisher (Dauphin, Pa.) and then junior Aspen Walker (Dalmatia, Pa.) doubled down the right field line, which plated Lehigh for the 8-2 lead.
After a scoreless fifth, the Lions brought home two in the sixth to end the game. Fisher touched home on a wild pitch and then a fielder's choice by junior Rylee Martinez (Norwalk, Calif.) allowed Lehigh to score to make the score 10-2.
Sophomore Kylee Miller (Chambersburg, Pa.) registered the win in the circle for Penn State Harrisburg, surrendering two runs on two hits while also striking out three.
First-year
Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) was credited with the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings.
Fisher finished game one going a team-best 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Junior
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) and Nadasi had a hit each for Cedar Crest.
Game Two – Penn State Harrisburg 11, Cedar Crest 1 (Five Innings)
The Lions struck first with a single tally in the first inning on a sacrifice line out to left field from the bat of Martinez, which was deep enough to score Fisher for the 1-0 advantage.
Penn State Harrisburg added two more in the second frame. Junior Sierra Sims (Elkridge, Md.) connected on a single through the left side to bring around first-year Ava Allison (Alexandria, Pa.). Fisher then recorded a base hit to left field, plating sophomore Cara Biesecker (Maytown, Pa.) to stretch the score to 3-0.
The Lions broke the game open with eight runs in the third to push the margin to 11-0.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Falcons put up one run in the fifth on an RBI single to right center from the bat of Hasert. The base knock scored junior
Taylor Faw (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) for Cedar Crest's lone tally of the contest in the 11-1 final.
Senior Carissa Yeager (Schuylkill Haven, Pa.) was the winning pitcher for Penn State Harrisburg, striking out a pair while only allowing two hits.
First-year
Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) took the loss in the circle for the Falcons, giving up 11 runs (seven earned) on 13 hits in 2.1 innings.
Fisher paced the Lions at the dish, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Hasert led the way for Cedar Crest, recording two hits in three at-bats while also picking up an RBI. Senior
Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter), Faw, and sophomore
Brooke Trentler (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) had a hit apiece to round out the column for the Falcons.
The loss ends the season for Cedar Crest (18-22 overall). Penn State Harrisburg (27-11 overall) advances to the double elimination portion of the United East Conference Tournament, which begins on Friday, May 9.
