Volleyball Loses Pair to Conclude Buttermaker Tournament

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — The Cedar Crest College volleyball team was defeated by William Peace University and Randolph-Macon College in straight sets at the Buttermaker Tournament on Saturday.

Match One – William Peace 3, Cedar Crest 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-20)

The Falcons fell behind early in the first set, unable to recover from a quick 3-0 lead by the Pacers. Despite efforts from senior Ellise Everett (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona), who delivered several key kills, Cedar Crest faced challenges against William Peace's consistent attack, highlighted by first-year Caitlin Bailey's (Wake Forest, N.C.) three kills. A late push from first-year Jasmine Beck (Allentown, Pa./Building 21) and Addison Losik (Big Piney, Wyo./Big Piney) helped narrow the gap, but the set ended in a decisive 25-11 victory for the Pacers.

The second set saw the Falcons initially take a narrow lead at 7-5, with Beck and Everett contributing kills. A service ace from first-year Sophia Curran (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier) at 11-11 briefly halted William Peace's momentum. However, the Pacers capitalized on a series of Cedar Crest errors and strong performances from sophomore Sarah Yates (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) and first-year Aaliyah Anderson (South Mills, N.C.), closing the set 25-15.

In the third set, William Peace surged ahead with a 4-0 run, including a service ace from senior AJ Townsend (Johnston City, N.C.). The Falcons fought back, with Everett tying the score at 11-11 with two service aces and a kill. Despite a late effort, including another kill from Everett, the Pacers maintained their lead, closing out the set 25-20.

Everett led Cedar Crest with 11 kills and two service aces for a total of 13 points. Junior Tianlly Davila (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Governor Thomas Johnson) orchestrated the offense with 11 assists and anchored the defense with 13 digs. First-year Phoebe Pietila (Hayesville, N.C./Hayesville) recorded a perfect attack percentage, while Curran contributed two aces and four kills.

Match Two – Randolph-Macon 3, Cedar Crest 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-14)

The match saw Cedar Crest open strong, with Davila and first-year Kayla Duenkel (Central Square, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) setting the stage. However, the Yellow Jackets quickly established control, leading to a 25-12 win for the visitors in the first set.

The Falcons rallied in the second set after falling behind early, with Duenkel delivering key kills. Davila's assists were crucial, but Randolph-Macon capitalized on the Cedar Crest errors, ultimately winning the set 25-13.

In the third set, Cedar Crest started strong, led by Everett's early kill. However, the score was tied at 9-9 when the Yellow Jackets seized control with effective plays, including two service aces from sophomore Karen Kwiatek (McDonough, Ga.). Despite a late kill from Curran, Randolph-Macon closed the set 25-14.

Davila guided the Falcons with 11 assists and 10 digs. Everett added four kills, while Pietila recorded eight digs. First-year Sahiomy Martes (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) made an impact with a service ace and seven digs.

Cedar Crest (0-10 overall) will return home to host Marywood University on Tuesday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m.
