Softball Swept By Widener

CHESTER, Pa. — The Cedar Crest College softball team was swept by Widener University at Fred Dohrmann Field on Thursday, suffering a 10-2 defeat in game one and an 8-0 setback in game two.

Game One – Widener 10, Cedar Crest 2 (Five Innings)

In the first game, the Falcons managed eight hits, including two doubles and a triple, but struggled to capitalize against the Pride, who delivered a decisive performance. The pivotal moment came in the third inning when Widener exploded for six runs, including two home runs and five doubles throughout the game. Junior Brooke Trentler (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) doubled to right center, allowing sophomore Taylor Lawrence (Bethel, Pa./Tulpehocken), who pinch ran for her, to score on sophomore Kaitlyn Stock's (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) subsequent double to left field, putting Cedar Crest on the board at 1-0. However, Widener quickly retaliated, with sophomore Elizabeth Carney's (Allentown, Pa.) double being the first of a barrage of hits that led to an 8-1 lead after three innings.

Cedar Crest added another run in the fourth inning when first-year Madacyn Snyder (Wind Gap, Pa./Pen Argyl) singled, stole two bases, and scored on Trentler's single to right. The Pride, however, extended their lead to 10-2 thanks to senior Katelyn Tong's (Lansdowne, Pa.) home run and first-year Brenna Quinn's (Monroe, N.Y.) two-run shot.

For Cedar Crest Stock made a notable impact with a double and an RBI, while Trentler contributed two hits, including a double, and one RBI. Snyder was active on the base paths, scoring a run and stealing two bases. Sophomore Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) added a triple to the team's efforts.

In the circle, sophomore Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) took the loss for the Falcons, pitching three and two-thirds innings and allowing 10 hits and 10 runs, with seven earned runs, while striking out five batters and walking one. Sophomore Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) pitched briefly, recording only one out with one hit and one walk, but struck out a batter.

For Widener, first-year Hayden Sissons (Glenolden, Pa.) pitched a complete game, surrendering eight hits and two earned runs while striking out eight batters.

Tong stood out for the Pride with a home run and a double, driving in two runs and scoring once. Sissons excelled both at the plate and in the circle, contributing with a double and an RBI while pitching a complete game. First-year Liza Flavin (Spring City, Pa.) scored twice and drove in two runs with two hits, while Quinn added a crucial two-run homer.

Game Two – Widener 8, Cedar Crest 0 (Five Innings)

In the second game, Cedar Crest managed just one hit over five innings and drawing four walks. Widener's offense was relentless, led by Tong, who hit a home run down the left field line in the first inning, driving in two runs and putting the Pride ahead 2-0.

Widener continued to build on their lead, scoring in every inning. Junior Alyssa Gomez (Middletown, N.Y.) doubled to bring in a run, followed by an RBI single from Carney, increasing the lead to 4-0 by the second inning.

The Pride added another run in the third inning, and in the fourth, Sissons doubled to drive in two more runs, rounded out by sophomore Jocelin Mayorga's (Gardena, Calif.) RBI double, solidifying an 8-0 lead. The Falcons were unable to score throughout the game, resulting in a final score of Widener 8, Cedar Crest 0.

Sophomore Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) recorded the Falcons' only hit and successfully stole a base. Acevedo pitched three and one-thirds innings, allowing four hits and striking out three batters despite being charged with six earned runs, while Gray pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on two hits.

Sophomore Bella Smith (Washington's Crossing, Pa.) delivered a strong performance for Widener, pitching three innings and yielding just one hit while striking out three batters. Mayorga also made an impact, contributing both as a hitter with a double and one RBI, and pitching one inning without allowing a hit.

Tong paced Widener with a standout performance, recording a home run and three RBI. Sissons contributed significantly, scoring three runs and driving in two RBI with a double.

Cedar Crest (4-6 overall) returns home to host Penn State Schuylkill for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 26 beginning at 5:00 p.m. Widener (3-7 overall) stays home to welcome in Alvernia University for a conference twinbill on Saturday, March 21 starting at 1:00 p.m.
