READING, Pa. — The Cedar Crest College softball team split a pair of conference games at Penn State Berks on Wednesday, starting the day with a narrow 1–0 loss in the first game, followed by a decisive 12–2 victory in the second.
Game One – Penn State Berks 1, Cedar Crest 0
In game one, the Falcons managed five hits, including a triple from sophomore
Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono), but left eight runners on base.
Sophomore
Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) and junior
Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior) each singled in the seventh, but Cedar Crest could not bring them home, culminating in a scoreless inning.
In the bottom half of the frame, first-year Shayna Morales (Hamburg, Pa.) doubled to right center, bringing in Autumn Weil for the winning run.
Sophomore
Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) pitched a complete game for the Falcons, securing five strikeouts and allowing only two hits. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Stock (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) reached base twice, with a hit and a walk. First-year
Madacyn Snyder (Wind Gap, Pa./Pen Argyl) contributed a stolen base and a hit.
On the opposing side, junior Paige Brightwell (Pittstown, N.J.) delivered a complete-game shutout for the Nittany Lions, striking out 13 batters over seven innings, allowing five hits and three walks.
Morales led Penn State Berks offensively with a double, an RBI, and two walks.
Game Two – Cedar Crest 12, Penn State Berks 2
In game two Cedar Crest turned the tide, executing a powerful offensive performance that resulted in a commanding 12–2 victory.
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead with a four-run first inning, highlighted by Stock's double and a two-run single from Mastillo.
Cedar Crest continued to build on their lead, scoring additional runs in the third and a pivotal seven-run fifth inning, which included a three-RBI double from junior
Brooke Trentler (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) and a two-RBI double from sophomore
Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North).
Nadasi excelled offensively for the Falcons with two hits, two RBI, and three runs scored. Stock added two doubles and an RBI, while Mastillo finished with two hits, including a triple, and three RBI.
Sophomore
Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) pitched a complete game for Cedar Crest, striking out three batters over five innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs.
First-years Natasha Hornung (Newton, N.J.) and Emma Infantino (Nazareth, Pa.) each contributed two hits and an RBI for Penn State Berks.
Cedar Crest (10-8 overall, 2-2 United East) will stay on the road to face Wilson College in a conference twinbill on Saturday, April 4 starting at 1:00 p.m. Penn State Berks (3-11 overall, 1-3 United East) travels to Penn State Harrisburg for a league doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
