ALLENTOWN, Pa. — The Cedar Crest College volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to Bryn Mawr College, 3-1, on Wednesday night at Lees Gymnasium. The Falcons took the opening set 25-20 before dropping the next three 20-25, 11-25 and 14-25.
Cedar Crest flipped the opening set after falling behind 9-8, winning five of the next six points to move ahead 13-10 as first-year
Taylor Friel (Nazareth, Pa/Nazareth Area) put down kills at 9-9 and 11-10. A later service ace from first-year
Kylie Heffner (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) gave the Falcons a 23-16 lead, and after the Owls got back to 23-20, Friel's kill and sophomore
Kayla Duenkel's (Central Square, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) block on the final point closed a 25-20 set.
Cedar Crest's biggest push in the second set came after Bryn Mawr moved ahead 10-3, with Heffner serving five straight points in a six-point answer that cut the score to 10-9. First-year
Autumn Clewell (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) had a kill during that stretch, while classmate
Gabby Manygoats (Bloomfield, N.M./Navajo Preparatory School) and Friel added blocks before Clewell later contributed a kill and an ace in a four-point response from 20-10 to 20-14. The Falcons made another late push to 23-20 on a Heffner kill and two Owls attack errors, but Bryn Mawr took the set 25-20.
Cedar Crest stayed level early in the third set, getting two kills from sophomore
Samantha Fitzpatrick (Royse City, Texas/Community), to move in front 3-2 before the Owls answered. Bryn Mawr separated behind Falcons' attacking and setting errors plus three service aces, including two during a late stretch that took the score to 23-10. Cedar Crest added kills from Heffner, Friel and Duenkel, but the Owls won the set, 25-11.
The Falcons made their strongest push after Bryn Mawr went ahead 17-5, winning seven of the next eight rallies to move the fourth set to 18-12. Duenkel had two kills during that stretch, and Clewell added two service aces. The Owls closed out the set from there, taking it 25-14.
Duenkel led Cedar Crest with seven kills and four total blocks, finishing with 10.5 points. Friel recorded a team-high 18 digs and added five kills, an ace, and a solo block. Clewell posted 12 assists, 15 digs and four service aces. First-year
Gloria Slavik (Key West, Fla./Basilica) added 11 assists and two digs.
Junior Adelaide Grace (Rochester, N.Y.) paced Bryn Mawr with 17 kills, hit .368, and added three blocks. Junior Charlotte Mullen (Brookline, Mass.) finished with 35 assists and 12 digs. First-year Abigail Quigley tallied 10 kills, five service aces and 10 digs. First-year Amelia Chen collected 26 digs, five service aces and six assists.
Cedar Crest (1-6 overall) travels to Ursinus College for a tri-match on Saturday, September 19. The Falcons play the host Bears at 11:00 a.m. followed by a contest against Immaculata University at 1:00 p.m. Bryn Mawr (2-4 overall) next hosts Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and will also play Elmira College at 3:00 p.m. as part of a tri-match.
