Lacrosse Drops Close Contest to Owls

Allentown, PA

The Cedar Crest College lacrosse team took to the field in their first of a three game home stand this week, welcoming the Bryn Mawr Owls to campus this afternoon.  It was also Cedar Crest College Spirit Day at the field, where t-shirts and other giveaways were given out at halftime.

As far as the game went the Falcons and Owls gave the fans exactly what they were looking for.  The Falcons struck first as Emily Rodenberger (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen High School) would score just over seven minutes into the game for her 23rd goal of the season.  But the Owls would strike back with a trio of goals led by leading scorer Claire Johnson who would next two over the course of five minutes.  It would then become the Vivianna Samite (Oakridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp) and Emily Rodenberger (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen High School) show as the two would score back to back to get the Falcons back into the game tying it at 3-3 with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half.  After another Bryn Mawr goal, Rodenberger would once again carry the Falcons to the goal with her third goal of the first half with just under ten minutes left to play.  But all the focus on offense would leave the Falcons defense exposed as the Owls would collect another trio of goals as three separate Bryn Mawr players would collect goals over the course of four minutes.  But with under 90 seconds left in the first half, Samite would squeeze through the Owl defense and find the back of the next for the second time and connect with 1:13 left in the first.  Bryn Mawr would get the final goal however, as Georgina Dominique would score the half's final goal with 39 seconds left as the Falcons would enter halftime down 5-8.

The second half would be all Cedar Crest as they would score early and often.  In the first seven minutes alone, three seperate Falcons would find the net led first by Senior Kim Barry (Greentown, PA/Wallenpaupack Area), and then Rodenberger and Samite would keep the daily trend and score back to back less than a minute apart.  After a Owl Yellow Card, the Falcons would take advantage of the man up opportunity and get the ball to the hot shooting Vivianna Samite (Oakridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp) and she would not disappoint as she would once again connect for her fifth goal of the day.  Jump ahead four minutes and once again the ball is with Samite and she would once again bring the Falcons back to the goal, scoring her sixth goal of the day with 17:42 on the clock.  Thanks to Samite's trio of goals, the Falcons would jump from down 8-9 to leading the Bryn Mawr College Owls 11-9.  But the lead would be short lived as a Falcon Yellow Card and being a man-down would be the down fall for the Falcons as the Owls would ring off five straight goals (two by Claire Johnson and two by Georgina Dominique).

After a Bryn Mawr timeout the Falcons would come out shooting as Emily Rodenberger (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen High School) would connect with her fifth goal of the day to bring the Falcons to within two, then 70 seconds later, Regina Gill (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley High School) would put the Falcons within one with five minutes left in the game.  After what seemed like a hundred shots and opportunities by the Falcons, the final buzzer rang out with the final score Bryn Mawr 14 and Cedar Crest 13.

As a team, the Falcons finished 11 of 13 in clears, while picking up 40 groundballs and grabbing 17 draw controls.

Individually for the Falcons, Samite and Rodenberger would total 11 of the Falcons 13 goals, while Kim Barry (Greentown, PA/Wallenpaupack Area) and Regina Gill (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley High School) would tally the final two.  Barry would also grab eight groundballs and seven draw controls while Gill and Samantha VanBeers (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) would each collect six groundballs a piece.

The Falcons will be on short rest as they will welcome Purchase College on Thursday for game two of the three game homestand with game time scheduled to begin at 4 pm.
