Volleyball drops game to King’s, sweeps Penn State Abington to split on Opening Night

ABINGTON, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest College Volleyball team opened their season in Abington, Pa. as they lost their first match, 3-1 to King's College, and then swept Penn State Abington, 3-0 on Friday night.
 
"I'm extremely proud of how hard our team has been working and the efforts they displayed tonight," commented Head Coach Shelby Morgan.
 
In Game 1, the Falcons won set 1, 25-22, but then lost three straight sets: 13-25, 10-25 and 23-25. Throughout the four sets, Cedar Crest had 35 kills, 148 total assists and 32 errors. Leading the team with 11 kills and 18 digs was sophomore Lindsey Davis (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) while freshman Talia Watson (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and freshman Madison Flatt (Reinholds, Pa./Cocauco) added 14 assists each. Junior Nicole Hill contributed five blocks as well in the contest.
 
Cedar Crest claimed Game 2 in straight sets, 3-0: 25-16, 25-19, 25-13. The Falcons had 27 total kills with 14 coming in set 1, 92 total assists and 17 errors. Sophomore Kailey Elrod (Annville, Pa./Palmyra Area) lead the team in kills and aces with eight kills and five aces. Leading the team in blocks was junior Mekayla Dela Cruz (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and Hill each contributed three while Watson contributed 10 assists. Davis earned 20 digs in the contest to round out team leaders.
 
"Tonight has shown some of our strengths and areas of improvement," continued Morgan. "I know this group will continue to work hard and it's only up from here.
 
The Volleyball squad will return to action on Thursday, September 6 for their first home game of the season as they go up against the College of Staten Island. Match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
