Volleyball goes 1-3 in Morrisville State College Tournament to open 2019 season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 MORRISVILLE, N.Y. --- The Cedar Crest College Volleyball squad went 1-3 to open up the 2019 season this weekend at the Morrisville State College Volleyball Tournament.

On Day 1, the Falcons kicked off the tournament against the host Mustangs, where they were defeated in straight sets (18-25, 19-25, 19-25), but bounced back with a win over SUNY Poly in four sets (25-19, 21-25, 25-14, 25-17).  After Day 1, the Falcons were 1-1 on the season.

Sophomore Britney Rivera (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) and freshman Kelsee Schouppe (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) lead the Falcons in Kills versus Morrisville with five kills each. Schouppe also led the Black and Yellow with six blocks and senior Nicole Hill (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) and Rivera each had four. Sophomores Madison Flatt (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) and Talia Watson (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) were the assist leaders in the match, Flatt with 13 and Watson with six. Junior Tiffany Hoppes (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) had 12 digs to lead the Falcons followed by junior Madison McGowan (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) with seven and Flatt with six. Cedar Crest ended the match with 38 digs, 21 kills and assists and 11 blocks.

In the match against SUNY Poly, the Black and Yellow were led by Hill who recorded 16 kills, six blocks and two service aces. Schouppe grounded 12 attacks and led the Falcons in blocks with seven. Also, in double-figures in kills was junior Elyse Podgurski (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) with 11. Four Falcons earned double-digit digs, led by Hoppes with 21, Rivera with 19, Flatt with 14 and Podgurski with 10. Flatt was strong in the assist game as she posted 40 assists in the victory, as well as recording five service aces. Hoppes followed suit with four service aces of her own. Overall, the Falcons posted 84 digs, 54 kills, 45 assists, and 13 service aces in the victory.

On Day 2 of the tournament, the Falcons were unable to come out on top, dropping the first match to Geneva 1-3 (23-25, 24-26, 25-22, 14-25) and then falling to Simmons 0-3 in straight sets (14-25, 21-25,14-25). Concluding the tournament, Cedar Crest is 1-3 to start the year.

A back-and-forth contest with the Golden Tornadoes and close finishes, the Falcons were led by Podgurski with nine kills, with Schouppe behind her with seven and Hill with six. Freshman Aliyah Rhoden (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) was the blocks leader for the Black and Yellow, recording six blocks, followed Hill with five and Schouppe with four. Hoppes was the team-leader in digs and aces with 18 and three respectively, as Flatt was behind her in the same categories with 16 kills and two service aces. Podgurski was also in double-digits with 10 digs in the contest.

Up next, the Falcons will host their only home tri-match of the season, on Saturday, September 7, when they start the day off against Pratt Institute at 10:00 AM and close out the day with Goucher College at 2:00 PM. Pratt and Goucher will go head-to-head during the 12:00 PM match. Live stats and live stream will be available for all matches.
