NORTH MYRTLE BRACH, SC – The Cedar Crest College Softball team (3-4) earned a pair of wins Friday evening at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex. First, the Falcons came from behind and defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 10-9, then they took down to Hilbert College, 8-7 to sweep the doubleheader.
Game 1 vs. Gwynedd Mercy University
The Griffins got on the scoreboard first with four runs in the top of the first to put the Black and Yellow behind 0-4. The Falcons had three runs cross in the third, cutting the deficit to 3-4, but Gwynedd Mercy got three more in the top half of that fourth inning, extending the Griffins lead to 3-7. The Black and Yellow scored two in their portion of the fourth inning, getting back within two, still trailing 5-7. In the seventh inning, the Griffins would tack on two more pushing their lead to four runs, 5-9, but the Falcons bats came alive at the right time. Cedar Crest would put together a come-from-behind victory, scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 10-9 victory over Gwynedd Mercy.
Cedar Crest was credited with 16 hits, coming from eight different Falcons. Junior
Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), sophomore
Rachel Savini (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy), and freshman
Renee Snyder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) each went 3-for-4 in the game.
Tremblay drove in two runs and scored two of her own, as
Savini also had two RBIs and scored once.
Snyder brought in an RBI and scored two runs of her own. Two others went 2-for-3, one was senior
Nicole Santaniello (Kissimmee, Fl./Osceola), who hit the Falcons first homerun of the year, and also hit a double for one RBI and scored twice. Junior
Patricia Dalton (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) also contributed two base hits and two RBIs in the win. Three other Falcons reached base safely.
Getting the start in the circle was senior
Breanna Young (Easton, PA /Wilson Area), who faced 22 batters, striking out two in 4.0 of work. Senior
Kendra Pekurny (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton Area) entered in relief, facing 12 batters in 3.0 innings pitched, earning her first win of the season.
Game 2 vs. Hilbert College
Hilbert started off the contest with three runs in the top of the first, but the Falcons quickly countered with three of their own, tying it up at 3-3 after one. Cedar Crest scored two more in the second to take a 5-3 lead, but the Hawks put up four runs in the third to regain a two-run lead at 5-7. The Black and Yellow once again tied the contest at 7-7 after three innings of play, which held until the sixth inning. Cedar Crest would score the game winning run in the bottom half of the sixth inning, before getting the final three outs to claim the second game of the day, 8-7.
Seven Falcons reached base on hits, totaling 12 hits in the contest.
Snyder went a perfect 4-for-4, hitting a triple and a double, and scored a run. Junior
Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and sophomore
Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) both turned in 2-for-4 performances for the Black and Yellow. Both of them recorded one RBI and one run scored apiece. Three others reached on base hits to combine to the total 12 hits.
Making the start in the circle was
Pekurny, who threw for 2.0 innings and recorded one strikeout in 16 batters faced.
Young, who faced 19 batters in 5.0 innings pitched, and received the victory, putting her at 1-1 on the season.
Cedar Crest will return up north and have over a week off before returning to play on Tuesday, March 17, when they travel to King's College for a doubleheader. First-pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM in Wilkes Barre.
