READING, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches against Alvernia University and Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (6-4 overall) lost to the Golden Wolves in a five-set match in the opener and then rebounded for a 3-1 victory over the Griffins in the second match of the day.
Cedar Crest and Alvernia alternated winning sets the first four sets. The Golden Wolves won the opening set 25-23. The Falcons answered back with a 25-22 second-set victory.
Alvernia took the third set, 26-24. The Falcons evened the match at two sets apiece with a 25-20 win in the fourth set. The hosts edged Cedar Crest in the fifth and deciding set, 16-14.
Leading the team in kills was freshman
Alexis Cummins (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) with 15. Sophomore
Ava Grapsy (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) followed with 12 kills while adding 18 assists and 18 digs for a triple-double. Senior
Talia Watson (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) tied a match-high with 24 assists and pitched in a match-high four service aces. Junior
Kelsee Schouppe (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) chipped in 11 kills and two blocks. Graduate student
Tiffany Hoppes (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) recorded a match-high 20 digs in the contest while sophomore
Rebekka Sanchez-Castro (Laurel, Md./Atholton) registered 15 digs.
Cedar Crest claimed the second match in four sets. Grapsy tallied another triple-double of 16 kills, 15 assists, to go along with 13 digs. She also pitched in a team-high three blocks. Cummins and Schouppe each had double-digit kills with 14 and 11, respectively. Watson once again paced the Falcons in the assist category with 24. Hoppes had a team-high 18 digs while Sanchez-Castro added 14 digs and a match-high six service aces.
Cedar Crest returns to the court on Tuesday, September 24 at home against Drew University. Match time is set 7:00 p.m.
