Softball Drops Pair of One-Run Games; Swept By Marywood in Non-League Action

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College softball team was swept by visiting Marywood University in a pair of one-run games, 8-7 and 2-1, on Thursday afternoon in non-conference play at Cynthia L. Blaschak Field.

Game One – Marywood 8, Cedar Crest 7

Marywood was the first to strike in the opener, tallying three runs in the fourth inning, all of which came on a three-run home run to right center from junior Cait Becher (Tremont, Pa.).

Cedar Crest got two runs back in the fifth. Junior Brianna Lankford (Hanover, Pa./South Western Senior) plated graduate student Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) on a sacrifice fly to right field. Two batters later, freshman Anaya Duncan (Baltimore, Md. /Franklin) crossed home on a fielding error in the infield to make it a 3-2 game.

The teams combined for eight runs in the sixth. The Pacers saw five come across in the top of the frame to push the score to 8-2.

The Falcons answered with three of their own. Lankford got things started with a two-run bunt single, followed by an RBI groundout by senior Sophia Callari (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon), which plated Tremblay.

Cedar Crest had a late charge in the seventh, but fell just short. Tremblay was back in the action with a two-out, two-run single to right field, bringing around freshmen Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) and Julia DiSands (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro). The next at-bat was a flyout, which ended the contest with the 8-7 final.

Tremblay and senior Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) each registered two hits to lead the Falcons.

Sophomore Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) surrendered eight runs (two earned) on seven hits while fanning five and walking two.

Game Two - Marywood 2, Cedar Crest 1

Game two was a duel between starting pitchers senior Lillian Boltz (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) and junior Gianna Marsico (Old Forge, Pa.). The first runs were scored in the first three innings before Marywood pulled ahead in the seventh.

Cedar Crest tallied the opening run as senior Rachel Savini (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) scored on a wild pitch.

Marywood pulled even in the third on double to left field by freshman Lindsey Jason (Olyphant, Pa.), plating sophomore Emily Rose (Scranton, Pa.).

The contest would stay tied for the next four innings before the Pacers scored the eventual game-winning tally in the eighth. Junior Julianna Biedler (Scranton, Pa.) hit a base knock up the middle, driving in Becher to give Marywood the 2-1 advantage.

The Falcons had one final time to bat, but were unable to get the marker across.

VanBuskirk paced Cedar Crest with two hits in the game-two loss.

Marsico finished with five strikeouts in her 11th start of the season. Boltz (2-2 overall) did not strike out a batter and walked three.

Cedar Crest (10-11 overall) will stay home and will welcome in Widener University on Monday, April 18 in a non-conference twinbill starting at 3:00 p.m.
