Softball Powers Past Cairn in CSAC Sweep

LANGHORNE, Pa. – Cedar Crest College won both games of a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) softball doubleheader at Cairn University on Saturday afternoon at the G. Patrick Stillman Complex.

The Falcons took the opener by a 11-0 final in six innings and then captured another run-rule triumph with a 13-4 win in the nightcap.

Game One – Cedar Crest 11, Cairn 0 (Six innings)

Cedar Crest scored three runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Graduate student Nicole Santaniello (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) knocked in the first run with a single to center and later scored on a wild pitch. The Falcons later extended the lead to 3-0 on an RBI groundout by freshman Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter), plating graduate student Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland).

Cedar Crest sent eight batters to the plate in the second inning and scored four runs to break the game open. Senior Rachel Savini (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) and junior Renee Snyder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) scored on an error in the outfield to start the scoring. Tremblay stole home while senior Sophia Callari (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) drove in Kline with a base knock to right field.

The Falcons tacked on four more in the sixth. Tremblay tripled down the right field line, scoring Savini. In the next at-bat, Kline converted an RBI double, plating Tremblay. Callari and senior Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) each contributed RBI singles to the outfield to drive in the final runs of the game.

Sophomore Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) only surrendered one hit to secure her fourth win and first shutout of the season for Cedar Crest. She tossed six innings and fanned five batters in the victory.

Tremblay, Callari, and VanBuskirk finished with two hits apiece for the Falcons.

Game Two – Cedar Crest 13, Cairn 4 (Six innings)

Cedar Crest put three on the scoreboard in the first inning and never looked back. Santaniello drove in the first run with a single to left field, and later scored on a single to right field by Tremblay. Callari connected on a base-hit to center field, which scored Tremblay.

Cairn got a pair of runs back in the home-half of the opening frame on a two-RBI double to right field by junior Theresa Beck (Lansdale, Pa.), plating freshman Abbi Heacock (Media, Pa.) and junior Kathryn Reid (Boonville, N.Y.).

The Falcons came back with two of their own in the second. Junior Brianna Lankford (Hanover, Pa./South Western Senior) sent VanBuskirk home with a triple to right field while Snyder drove in Lankford with a base-hit to center field.

The Highlanders got one run in the next half inning on a single to center field from junior Jenna Kenyon (Clarksville, Md.). The base hit scored freshman Julia Bruestle (Abington, Pa.) to make the score 5-3 in favor of Cedar Crest.

The Falcons added another pair in the third, both of which scored on a fielding error by sophomore Katie Fauske (Staten Island, N.Y.), pushing the margin to four, 7-3.
Cairn would tack on its final run in the fifth on an RBI single from E. Holmes, plating Beck.

Cedar Crest put the game away in the sixth, tallying six in the frame for the 13-4 final.

Senior Lillian Boltz (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) secured her second win on the season for the Falcons, tossing a complete game. She matched a season-high with eight strikeouts while allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits.

Snyder, Callari, VanBuskirk, and Lankford registered three hits apiece in the nightcap for Cedar Crest.

Cedar Crest (7-8 overall, 2-2 CSAC) will start a six-game homestand on Monday, April 4 with a non-conference doubleheader against Cabrini University beginning at 3:00 p.m. Cairn (3-11 overall, 0-4 CSAC) travels to Gwynedd Mercy University on Tuesday, April 5 for a twinbill starting at 5:00 p.m.
