Late Charge Gives Lacrosse Victory at Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Cedar Crest College lacrosse team picked up its second win of the season on Monday evening, defeating Centenary University by an 11-8 final at J.E. Reeves Turf Field.

Sophomore Emily Schoelier (Newton, N.J./Sussex County Technical) and freshman Maddie Graham (Clayton, Del./Smyrna) netted five goals each to lead the Falcons. The five-goal mark set a new season-high for Schoelier and matched a season-high for Graham, a feat she has recorded on two other occasions this season. Freshman Brynn Rifino (Dover, Del./Smyrna) netted the other goal for Cedar Crest while junior Kailyn Jones (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly) handed out the Falcons' lone assist.

Senior Kristin Bell (Hackettstown, N.J.) led the Cyclones (1-5 overall, 0-4 CSAC) with a hat trick. Senior Amanda Tietjen (Fair Lawn, N.J.) added two.

Bell got Centenary on the board eight seconds into the contest for an early 1-0 advantage. The Falcons came back with a 3-0 run on back-to-back goals by Graham with the third being credited to Schoelier. Bell cut the Cedar Crest advantage to just one on a woman-down goal at the 2:59 mark. The marker was set up by sophomore Victoria Schirripa (Howell, N.J.) to make the score 3-2 at the end of one.

The Falcons outscored the Cyclones 4-1 in the second quarter to extend the margin to four, 7-3, at the half. Graham capped the hat trick with a tally with 11:56 remaining on the clock, but Bell answered back just 35 seconds later with a marker, which was assisted by Brooke Bode. Cedar Crest responded with three straight with one from Schoelier and the final two from Graham.

Centenary came out of the half with two straight tallies to trim the lead to 7-5, but Schoelier netted the final goal of the frame with 3:19 remaining to make it an 8-5 score heading into the fourth quarter.

The Cyclones tied the game with 9:09 left after two goals from Tietjen and the other from freshman Lily Butcher (Hopkinton, N.H.). The Falcons then closed the game on a 3-0 run on two markers from Schoelier and the final from Rifino for the 11-8 final.

Sophomore Mira Carver (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) was solid between the pipes, stopping 13 shots to earn the win for Cedar Crest. Freshman Chloe Neubauer (Hackettstown, N.J.) absorbed the loss for Centenary and finished with seven saves.

The Falcons tallied 30 ground balls in the contest with senior Madyson Lagano (Elkton, Md./North East) recording a team-high five. Jones and senior Sydney Heatcott followed with four each while sophomore Kayleigh Woomer (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard), Schoelier, junior Alexandra Infante (Stowe, Vt./Stowe), senior Kaitlyn Kozdron (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township ), and Carver had two apiece. Sophomore Krystal Sears (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township), Graham, and freshman Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) closed the category with one each.

Cedar Crest also had 13 caused turnovers in the triumph. Graham, Heathcott, freshman Ashley Large (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit), Infante, and Kozdron had two apiece while Jones, Woomer, and Schoelier each had one.

Cedar Crest (2-7 overall, 1-4 CSAC) will close the season at home against Sweet Briar College on Saturday, April 30 at 10:00 a.m. It will also be Senior Day for the Falcons. Centenary will welcome in Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday, April 27 at 4:00 p.m.
