ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon at Lees Gymnasium. The Falcons were edged by Moravian University in five sets to open the day and finished the afternoon with a straight-set victory over Alvernia University.
Match One – Moravian 3, Cedar Crest 2 (21-25, 25-12, 25-13, 20-25, 15-9)
The Falcons and Greyhounds battled it out in a five-set match. The Falcons took the opening set by a 25-21 score. Moravian responded by taking the next two sets, 25-12 and 25-13. Cedar Crest evened the contest at two sets apiece with a 25-20 fourth set win. The Greyhounds were able to edge the Falcons in the decisive fifth set, 15-9 to take the victory.
Cedar Crest had 37 kills, 32 assists, 84 digs, 13 service aces and 10 blocks. Leading the team with 12 kills was senior
Kelsee Schouppe (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg), who also eight digs, three service aces, and three block assists. Junior
Ava Grapsy (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) registered a double-double of 28 assists, and 14 digs. Sophomore
Alexis Cummins (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) was the other Falcon to record double-digit kills with 10. Six Cedar Crest student-athletes finished with double figure digs, paced by junior
Rebekka Sanchez-Castro (Columbia, Md./Atholton) with 17.
Match Two – Cedar Crest 3, Alvernia 0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-16)
Cedar Crest claimed its first win of the season in the straight set variety.
The Falcons earned 43 kills, 10 service aces, 40 assists, and 51 digs. Sophomore
Alexis Cummins (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) posted a team-high 15 kills to go along with 15 digs for a double-double.
Junior
Ziah Melton (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) finished with nine kills while first-year
Ellise Everett (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona ) tallied seven. Grapsy paced the Falcons again in the assist category with 25 while Sanchez-Castro pulled in a team-high 18 digs. Grapsy added 10 digs for her second-straight double-double.
Sophomore
Akashia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute ) tallied a team-high three blocks while Schouppe and Everett each had a pair.
Cedar Crest (1-2 overall) will head to the Neumann University Tournament, where they will begin play on Friday, September 16 against Stockton University. First serve is set for 8:00 p.m
