GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team dropped its season opening match at Gwynedd Mercy University in a 3-1 final on Thursday night at The Griffin Complex.
The Griffins took the first set by a 25-21 score. The Falcons evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-18 second set win. Gwynedd Mercy went on to take the last two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-15, respectively.
Cedar Crest tallied a total of 48 points with 49 digs, 37 kills, 34 assists, nine service aces and two blocks in the match.
For the statistical leaders, sophomore
Alexis Cummins (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and first-year
Ellise Everett (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona ) led the way for the Falcons with eight kills apiece. Junior
Ziah Melton (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) followed with seven kills of her own. Junior
Rebekka Sanchez-Castro (Columbia, Md./Atholton) paced Cedar Crest with 16 digs and three service aces. Junior
Ava Grapsy (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) registered a double-double of 28 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore
Akashia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute ) and senior
Kelsee Schouppe (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) tallied two blocks each.
Cedar Crest (0-1 overall) will look to rebound on Saturday, September 10 when they host a tri-match with Moravian University and Alvernia University. The Falcons will face the Greyhounds at 10:00 a.m. followed by a match with the Golden Wolves at 2:00 p.m.
