CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team picked up its fourth consecutive victory with a 3-0 sweep of Wilson College in a United East Conference-Skye Division match at Gannett Field House on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons won by set scores of 25-14, 25-13, and 25-20.
Cedar Crest got out to a 5-0 lead in the first set, capped off by a kill from senior
Ava Grapsy (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic). The Falcons would eventually stretch its lead to 10, 13-3, after an attack error by the Phoenix. Later in the frame, Wilson cut the deficit to six after a 4-1 run, finished off by a service ace from first-year Abby Moreland (Sabillasville, Md.) to make the score 17-11. Cedar Crest then closed the set on an 8-3 run to take the stanza by the 25-14 score.
The Falcons doubled up the Phoenix in the early going of set two, 10-5, after a kill from junior
Akashia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) to conclude a conclude a 4-0 spurt. Wilson answered with back-to-back points, but Cedar Crest went on a 6-1 run to push the margin back to eight, 16-8. The home team got to within six, 18-12, after a Falcons' service error, but Cedar Crest responded with a 7-1 run to win the second set, 25-13.
Wilson grabbed the lead early in the third set, going up 6-3 after a kill from Allyson Garcelon. After two straight points to give the Phoenix a 9-8 advantage, the Falcons embarked on an 8-0 run to grab a seven-point lead, 16-9. The home team was able to trim the deficit to as few as four in the late stages of the stanza, but Cedar Crest held off the charge with a 25-20 set win and the victory in straight sets.
Senior
Maddison Minyo (Covington, Pa./North Penn-Mansfield) guided the Falcons with 10 kills to go along with three blocks and six digs. Sophomore
Ellise Everett (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) recorded nine kills and a match-high six blocks. Grapsy added seven kills, four blocks, 15 assists, and five digs. First-year
Nikki Blair (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) handed out a match-high 19 assists to go along with six digs and one service ace. Senior
Daja Jackson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Gilbert (Ariz.)) tallied a match-high 12 digs to pace the Cedar Crest defense.
Cedar Crest (9-8 overall, 4-0 United East Conference-Skye Division) returns to the court at Clarks Summit University on Tuesday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. Wilson (1-20 overall, 1-3 United East Conference-Skye Division) will head to Rosemont College for its next match on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
