LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team split a pair of contests on Tuesday afternoon to mark its second day at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Falcons defeated Bridgewater State University, 6-1, to start the day and then closed with a 9-2 loss to Penn College in the nightcap.
Game One – Cedar Crest 6, Bridgewater State 1
After a scoreless first, Cedar Crest put one on the board in the second when first-year
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) scored on a passed ball to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Falcons.
Cedar Crest added three in the fourth inning to build a 4-0 advantage. Senior
Brianna Lankford (Hanover, Pa./South Western Senior) crossed home on a passed ball to begin the scoring in the frame. Graduate student
Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) drove in Hasert on a groundout to second base for the second tally. Graduate student
Ashley Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) sent classmate
Rachel Savini (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) around to score on a single to right field.
The Falcons pushed across one run in each of the next two innings to extend the margin to 6-0. Lankford singled through the left side, plating senior
Renee Snyder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) in the fifth while VanBuskirk scored on a fielding error in the sixth.
The Bears put one run on the scoreboard in the sixth after sophomore Riley Fitzgerald (Swansea, Mass.) grounded out to short, which scored junior Janet Jolly (Raynham, Mass.) for the 6-1 final.
Heller concluded the contest going 2-for-4 with an RBI. First-year
Taylor Faw (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) also finished with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 at the dish.
Senior Olivia Silva (Somerset, Mass.) led the Bears with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
Junior
Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) registered the win in the circle for Cedar Crest. She only allowed one run on seven hits while fanning five in the complete game effort. Junior Tatiana Burcy (Hyde Park, Mass.) was tagged with the loss for Bridgewater State. She gave up four runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one in 3.2 innings of work.
Game Two – Penn College 9, Cedar Crest 2
Penn College struck first with two runs in the second inning to start things. Senior Maddie Hurst (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) drove in both runs on a double to left center.
The Falcons evened the score in the fourth frame when Savini connected on a two-run single to right field. The base hit plated Hasert and Snyder to knot the game, 2-2.
The Wildcats broke the tie in the fifth on a two-RBI single from first-year Kassidy Chase (Bernville, Pa.) to make it 4-2.
After a two-spot in the fifth for Penn College, the Wildcats stretched the margin to seven, 9-2, the eventual final, with three runs in the seventh.
Hurst guided Penn College, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Senior Jordan Specht (Fredrick, Md.) registered two hits in at-bats to go along with an RBI. Senior Ivvy Morder (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored while first-year Taylor Luzier (Curwensville, Pa.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Savini paced Cedar Crest with a perfect 3-for-3 hitting with two RBI. Senior
Reilly Mateljan (Friedens, Pa./Somerset Area) concluded the game going 2-for-4.
Senior Kyla Benner (Bethlehem, Pa.) was credited with the win in the circle for the Wildcats. She allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one. Junior
Kristina Cagle (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick) was tagged with the loss for the Falcons, giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. She fanned one and walked four in the defeat.
Cedar Crest (1-3 overall) will have a day off tomorrow, March 7 and will next play on Wednesday, March 8 against Greensboro College at 11:00 a.m. followed a contest against William Peace University at 3:00 p.m.
