LA PLUME, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College lacrosse team made a late second-half charge, but came up short in a 13-8 final at Keystone College on Saturday afternoon to start Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
The Giants had a strong first quarter, outscoring the Falcons, 6-1. Sophomore
Maddie Graham (Clayton, Del./Smyrna) started the contest with an unassisted goal at the 11:45 mark. The Giants then answered with six-straight goals. Senior Miranda Mascia (Blakeslee, Pa.) got the opening tally for the Giants with 10:59 to play and then she assisted junior Maria Tomada (Buenos Aires, Argentina) 1:23 later to put Keystone in front. The home team got a pair of goals from sophomore Makayla Batts (New Oxford, Pa.) and one each from sophomore Meaghan Drennan (Drums, Pa.) and junior Vicky Mainero (Francisco Alvarez, Buenos Aires, Argentina) for the five-goal advantage after one.
Keystone added to its lead in the second frame, edging Cedar Crest, 4-2. Graham netted the initial goal of the frame for the Falcons at the 13:39 mark, but the Giants responded with three straight markers with one coming from Mainero and a pair from Drennan to go up, 9-2. Graham completed her hat trick with a goal with 7:33 to play and then junior Gabby Lodato (Union, N.J.) found Tomada for the last tally of the stanza to make the score 10-3.
The teams traded two-goal spurts in the third quarter. Mainero and Batts found the back of the net for Keystone. Graham deposited one home off an assist from first-year
Kylah Demarest (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) while first-year
Brooke Holley (Elkton, Md./Elkton) scored her seventh of the season with 1:21 on the clock to cut the deficit to seven, 12-5, with 15 minutes to go.
Cedar Crest's late charge began with the fifth goal of the afternoon from Graham at the 13:06 mark of the final frame. Just over a minute later, Mainero assisted Drennan on her fourth goal of the contest. The Falcons would then close with two unassisted goals from Demarest to make it the 13-8 final.
Junior Hannah Osbahr (Old Bridge, N.J.) was credited with the win in goal for the Giants, making 12 saves. Junior
Kayleigh Woomer (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) registered six stops in the setback.
Graham paced the Falcons with five points on five goals. Demarest pitched in four points on two goals and two assists. Holley had one goal to close the point category.
Drennan, Mainero, and Batts each finished with four points for Keystone.
Cedar Crest registered a season-high 25 ground balls in the game. Junior
Adriana Hinkle (Palmerton, Pa./Homeschooled (played for Lehighton)), sophomore
Ashley Large (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit), and sophomore
Abi Sipel (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) led the way with four apiece. Demarest followed with three. Holley, Graham, and sophomore
Rachel Bilger (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Dublin) pitched in two each while sophomore
Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon), Woomer, first-year
Adriana Dias (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), and first-year
Ellie Terranova (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) recorded one apiece.
The Falcons also had 12 caused turnovers. Large and Sipel paced the squad with three while Hinkle, Demarest, and Bilger had two each.
Cedar Crest closed the box score with seven draw controls. Graham registered a team-high four and Demarest added three.
Cedar Crest (3-4 overall, 0-1 CSAC) will play host to Wilson College for its next game on Tuesday, April 18 starting at 6:30 p.m. Keystone (4-5 overall, 3-0 CSAC) takes on Wells College in a non-conference home game on Friday, April 21 at 5:30 p.m.
