Wrestling Splits Pair of Matches at Ursinus Tri-Match

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College wrestling team split a pair of matches in a tr-match at Ursinus College, falling to the host Bears, 42-5, and then defeating Misericordia University in a 35-15 final on Sunday afternoon at the Floy Lewis Bakes Center.

"We can take a lot to the film room after a day like today," said Head Wrestling Coach Alex Depew. "We came out and took it to Misericordia physically. We dropped a couple matches that we had no business losing, but still controlled those bouts."

Match One – Ursinus 42, Cedar Crest 5

The Falcons picked up five points with a forfeit win from senior Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) at 103.

At 110, sophomore Mandy Gavares (Matawan, N.J.) took down sophomore Leilani Martinez (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township Senior) by tech fall to grab four points for Ursinus.

First-year Olivia Guy (Ocean City, N.J.) defeated first-year Mel Val (Tracy City, Tenn./St. Andrew's Sewanee) via fall (2:10) at 117 to push the match score to 9-5.

First-year Arianna Gonzalez (Fallsburg, N.Y./Fallsburg Junior Senior) was beaten by junior Kalli Roskos (Delran, N.J.) by tech fall at 124 to increase the score to 13-5.

At 131, sophomore Stacy Bloomfield (Glen Ridge, N.J.) topped sophomore Alaina Stanford (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) by way of tech fall to push the lead to 12, 17-5.

First-year Emma Sagi (Old Bridge, N.J.) defeated graduate student Rachel DeGiulio (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) by fall at 138.

At 145, first-year Symarah Drey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was taken down by sophomore Paisley Fox (Flemington, N.J.) by way of fall (1:50).

Sophomore Emma Matera (Delran, N.J.) defeated junior Draydon Charman (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) at 160 by fall.

Sophomore Sarah Seltzer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) was beaten by sophomore Gianna Perez (Soledad, Calif.) by fall at 180.

The match closed with a forfeit win by first-year Evette Colon (Rockaway, N.J.) at 207.

In a pair of exhibition matches, Val defeated first-year Adriana Farese (Old Bridge, N.J.) earned a win via tech fall at 124 and then senior Zakiyyah Sabir (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia E&T) lost to Kylie Wright by fall at 145.

Match Two – Cedar Crest 35, Misericordia 15

The Falcons began the match with forfeit wins by Jackson and Martinez at 103 and 110, respectively to give Cedar Crest a 10-0 lead.

The visitors got another pair of forfeit victories by Val and Gonzalez at 117 and 124, respectively, to push the score to 20-0.

At 131, first-year Ahlexa Montalvo (Bloomfield, N.J.) topped Stanford via fall (5:56).

DeGuilio captured a win by fall over first-year Madelyne Stultz (Tobyhanna, Pa.) at 2:05 at 138.

Drey claimed a victory over first-year Kailey Remish (Hanover Township, N.J.) by fall (2:01) at 145.

At 160, Charman defeated first-year Maya Landefeld (Harrisburg, Pa.) by way of fall (2:05).

First-year Elizabeth Adebola (Perth Amboy, N.J.) took down Seltzer via fall at 180 and then the match closed with a forfeit win for the Cougars at 207 for the 35-15 final.

In the lone exhibition match, Janiyah Griffin topped Sabir via fall.

"We didn't show that same push against Ursinus," continued Depew. "They are as well coached as any team in the region and have a dynamic roster. I have to find ways to better prepare our team for a match like that. We'll get back to work on Tuesday and start making the adjustments we need to."

Cedar Crest (1-1 overall) will next participate in an individual tournament at Millersville University on Sunday, November 17 at 10:00 a.m.
