Wrestling Competes at Millersville Women's Collegiate Open

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College wrestling team participated in the Millersville University Women's Collegiate Open on Sunday.

"I'm really proud of how we performed today," said Head Wrestling Coach Alex Depew. "13 total wins and that helped us earn a fourth-place team finish. (Alaina) Stanford continues to improve and is now the first Cedar Crest wrestler to win a collegiate tournament. She didn't just win today. She dominated everyone she wrestled."

In the first match of the day, senior Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) was defeated by Emma Acampora by tech fall. In the next round of the round robin, Jackson was beaten by Jaclyn Bouzakis. In the final match, Gurleen Khattra took down Jackson via fall and Jackson finished fourth at 103.

Sophomore Leilani Martinez (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township Senior) was defeated by first-year Faryn Dewitt (Scottsdale, Ariz.) of Waynesburg University by decision, 2-0. In the consolation round, Martinez was defeated by Mariella Koufalis of the Binghamton Women's Wrestling Club by way of fall.

After a bye in the Round of 16, first-year Mel Val (Tracy City, Tenn./St. Andrew's Sewanee) took down first-year Karley Perrini (Waretown, N.J.) of Felician University by tech fall. In the semifinals, Val defeated Delaware Valley University sophomore Mariah Koster (Nutley, N.J.) by fall (1:27) to advance to the first-place bout, where they were beaten by Delaware Valley University sophomore Josey Wehr (Orefield, Pa.) by decision, 7-4, to finish second at 117.

Following a bye in the round of 16, first-year Arianna Gonzalez (Fallsburg, N.Y./Fallsburg Junior Senior) was taken down by way of tech fall by Alfred State College junior Dianna Pineda (Deltona, Fla.). In the consolation round, Gonzalez earned a victory by fall over McDaniel College junior Sabina Alvarez Prats (San Juan, P.R.) (0:38). Gonzalez was then beaten by Penn State Altoona first-year Maya Berrios (Portland, Ore.) by fall and in the fifth-place match, was defeated by Muhlenberg College first-year Alessandra Rodriguez (Pennsauken, N.J.) by fall as she finished sixth at 124.

Sophomore Alaina Stanford (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) claimed a pair of tech fall victories over Hayley Cilento in the quarterfinals and then over Felician University first-year Crisia Bonilla (Great Neck, N.Y.) to advance to the first-place bout. In the first-place bout, Stanford topped Carmela Cancelmo, 8-0 to capture the 131lb championship.

Following a bye in the round of 16, junior Olivia Horninger (Friedens, Pa./Northern Lehigh) defeated Alfred State College sophomore Ethe Hemphill (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) by way of fall (0:22). In the next round, Horninger was taken down by Delaware Valley University first-year Olivia Ball (Harrisburg, Pa.) by way of tech fall. In the consolation round, Alvernia University sophomore Abbigail Kohl (Reading, Pa.) topped Horninger by fall. Horninger then captured fifth place with a win via fall (1:14) over Alfred State College sophomore Brooke Walsh (Brockport, N.Y.).

Senior Zakiyyah Sabir (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia E&T) began the day with a loss by fall to McDaniel College first-year Taylor Mead (Westminster, Md.). In the consolation round, Sabir was taken down by Muhlenberg College senior Penelope Schnieder (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) by fall.

After a bye in the round of 16, junior Draydon Charman (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) was defeated by fall (3:50) by Sophia Lombardo of Sussex Women's Wrestling. In the consolation round, Charman claimed a fall victory (1:19) over McDaniel College junior Summer James (Westminster, Md.). She then captured another win, this time topping Alvernia University first-year Molly Winters (Wernersville, Pa.). In the fifth-place bout, Charman defeated Penn State Altoona first-year Camryn Steinbuch (Bedford, Pa.) by way of fall (3:21).

"(Mel) Val is proving that they are among the best in the region, even in a close finals loss," Depew continued. "Our captain (Draydon) Charman showed a ton of grit and wrestled back for a fifth-place finish. Every one of our wrestlers went out and worked today, and that is the style of wrestling we teach."

Cedar Crest will next host its first matches of the season, welcoming in Felician University and Alvernia University on Wednesday, November 20 for a tri-match starting at 5:00 p.m.
