Val Takes Fourth to Lead Wrestling at New Standard Corporation Invitational

YORK, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College wrestling team competed at the New Standard Corporation Invitiational, hosted by York College (Pa.) on Saturday. First-year Mel Val (Tracy City, Tenn./St. Andrew's Sewanee) placed fourth at 117 to lead the Falcons.

Senior Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) began the day with a loss by tech fall to Chloe Gross of York College. After a bye in the first round of the consolation round, Jackson was defeated by fall by Mckenna Acampora of Delaware Valley University.

Following a bye in the round of 16, sophomore Leilani Martinez (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township Senior) was taken down by way of fall (2:42) by York's Gisele Ramirez. In the consolation round, Martinez lost to Callie Helton of Baldwin Wallace by tech fall.

Val recorded a victory over Delaware Valley University's Taylor Mazzoni in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Val beat Janieliz Cotto of Western New England University by tech fall. Val was then defeated in the semifinal round, 5-0, by Madeline Li of New England College. Val went on to place fourth at 117.

First-year Arianna Gonzalez (Fallsburg, N.Y./Fallsburg Junior Senior) began her day with a 5-2 victory over Orla King of New England College. In the next round, Gonzalez was defeated by Jazmene Molina by way of fall. Gonzalez closed out her day with a loss by tech fall to Rebekah May of Utica University.

Sophomore Alaina Stanford (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) started her day with a close 9-7 loss to Danielle Ruiz of Albion College. In the consolation round, Stanford earned a 5-3 win over Delaware Valley University's Eva Herrera and was then taken down by fall (2:45) in the next round by York's Jada Stoneberg.

Senior Zakiyyah Sabir (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia E&T) was defeated by fall by Kendall Branchaud of Western New England University in the round of 16. After a bye in the consolation round, Sabir was taken down by Western New England University's Rebecca Kilday by fall.

First-year Symarah Drey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) also competed at 145. She lost by tech fall to Mount Union's Karlie Stith and was then beaten by fall (1:09) by Karime Carmarena-Tejeda of New England College in the consolation round.

First-year Lexy Jones (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area Senior) started her day with a loss by fall (3:42) to Emma Helverson of Delaware Valley University. In the consolation round, Jones was defeated by York's Allison Brandt by fall (2:37).

Cedar Crest will now have an extended break and will return to the mat on Sunday, January 12 at the Ursinus College Duals starting at 11:00 a.m.
