Softball Drops Pair to Immaculata, Penn State Harrisburg

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team dropped a pair of games on Tuesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Falcons were defeated by Immaculata University in a 16-2 final in five innings and then Cedar Crest fell to Penn State Harrisburg, 12-0, in the nightcap.

Game One – Immaculata 16, Cedar Crest 2 (Five Innings)

The Mighty Macs struck for five runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Peyton McGowan (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) started the scoring with a two-run single through the right side, plating classmate Kaitlyn Carter (Wilmington, Del.) and junior Bryele Anthony (Chatsworth, N.J.). After McGowan stole second, sophomore Rylee Martin (Dillsburg, Pa.) singled through the left side to score senior Jess Oldham (Wilmington, Del.). Junior Courtney Gable (Kimberton, Pa.) then closed the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate McGowan. Martin also came around to score on the play after a fielding error to make the score 5-0.

Immaculata then pushed across four runs in the second. McGowan drew a bases-loaded walk and then in the next at-bat, Martin delivered a bases-clearing triple to right field for the 9-0 advantage.

The Mighty Macs plated one run in the third after Anthony scored following Carter reaching on a fielding error as the margin was extended to 10-0.

Immaculata registered three runs in the fourth to stretch its lead to 13-0, but the Falcons responded with a pair in the home half of the frame. Both runs came on a two-run single to left center field, which scored junior Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) and sophomore Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) to make the score 13-2.

The Mighty Macs recorded three more tallies in the fifth to come away with the 16-2 final score.

Martin went a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish with four RBI and three runs scored. Anthony was 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. McGowan and Murphy also contributed multiple hits for Immaculata.

Junior Anaya Duncan (Baltimore, Md./Franklin), Kline, senior Kristina Cagle (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick), and Trentler had one hit each for the Falcons.

Senior Riece Onoroto (Cinnaminson, N.J.) was credited with the win in the circle. She tossed five innings and allowed two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out seven. Junior BB Aquila (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was tagged with the loss, surrendering 16 runs (12 earned) on 14 hits.

Game Two – Penn State Harrisburg 12, Cedar Crest 0 (Five Innings)

Penn State Harrisburg tallied one run in the top of the first inning after first-year Cara Biesecker (Maytown, Pa.) singled to right center, which scored junior Madelyn Lehigh (Harrisburg, Pa.) for the 1-0 advantage.

The Nittany Lions plated eight runs in the second to build a 9-0 lead.

Penn State Harrisburg pushed two runs across in the third. Sophomore Aspen Walker (Dalmatia, Pa.) reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed classmate Elaina Gates (Marysville, Pa.) to score. Lehigh then scored a fielding error to send the score to 11-0.

The Nittany Lions registered one more run in the fourth after sophomore Jocelyn Bennett (Towanda, Pa.) singled in junior Carissa Yeager (Schuylkill Haven, Pa.) for the 12-0 final score.
